There's a way to do a hard restart...I think you have to hold down the power and menu buttons at the same time and it will restart. Depending on what it is.

To reset ipod Classic 120gb if it isn't responding ( assuming it's an ipod Classic you have got? although I'm pretty sure this same procedure applies to the older 160gb & 80gb versions of the Classic ) you need to slide the hold switch to on and then back again, then press both the menu and center buttons ( together ) for about 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Doing this should reboot the ipod and in theory it should start to work again.
Apple have done their usual trick of releasing a new model ( well several new versions of different types of ipods actually ) onto the market without giving anyone any real warning. I have just got a new 120gb and the twats have released a new 160gb version just a few days after mine was delivered No real difference between the two versions that I can see? except for an extra 40 gigs ( this is the 2nd time this has happened to me, but this isn't nearly as bad as the 1st time it happened to me when they replaced the old ipod Photo with a new VIDEO! capable one just a few days after I'd got the ipod Photo!
They discontinued the old 160gb for a cheaper 120gb and now they have introduced the 160gb again! whats that all about then? except to try and force people to keep buying a new one. Well not me! my new / OLD!? 120gb has everything I wanted when I decided to upgrade, except the extra 40 gigs this latest and previous 160gb had, but the good side is it was a hell of a lot cheaper to buy So that me done unless it buggers up or they bring out a new ipod in the future that is so fantastic, radically different and fairly cheap to buy that it would be irresistible and worth getting.
Apple! rotten Apple more like I'm having great fun slagging them off everywhere though LOL!
On the subject of locked ipods I'm pretty sure that you can reset the ipod via the reset / restore button within the itunes programme itself? but don't quote me on that!
They`re great items, but see where ya comin from.
I notice theyve finally put FM radio on the new models of Nano ??
Wish they could put FM/AM on their models

I agree Apples products are great and I'm a big fan of them, plus the way they improve things like the example you have given is also great, but as you say, why haven't they put a radio on all their different model ipods and the taking video capability that the new Nano apparently has, all at the same time? I know why! because 6 months or whenever down the line, they will put them on say the Classic along with some other non essential item, reduce the price a little bit, and the gig size down to say 100gb and then tout it as the must have 8th generation version. Also for good measure they will release it without any prior warning onto unsuspecting customers who are about to buy the previous older version.
The way Apple treats its customer base is nothing short of criminal! but they are well known for these tricks. It won't change until people tell them to either fuck off! and go and buy another brand, or keep their particular model until they really have no option to change it which is what I'm going to do
Edit.... I've just been looking at them on a certain other site and right next to one ( the new 160gb Classic ) they are trying to flog a 5 year protection / warranty plan for £97.99!! I didn't investigate what this plan actually covers but if it's only on the ipod then if Apple have their way we will have bought about 7 newer generations by the time the 5 years expires!I mean you have got to laugh haven't you LOL!
There's a saying among the nerds: if it's shipping, it's obsolete.
The next model of anything is always going to have something on it that you don't have and will certainly want. That's how they get you.

Well yes what your saying is absolutely true Em, but there are certain and ethical ways of going about it ( or at least their should be ) i.e. not so underhanded and with certain time frames and information given before a new model / version is released.
Of course Apple are perfectly entitled to act the way they do, but eventually their marketing strategy might just backfire on them and come back to bite them on the arse, at least it should if there is any justice in this world
Apple gave us a ground breaking computer back in 1984/85 and that was the MACINTOSH.
In 2009, the Macintosh is still light years ahead.
But the world didn't want that - they wanted silly little fashion toys instead.
As a Mac user since 1985, I revel in instances in which any Johnny come lately IPOD user gets ripped off into oblivion. Karma Police .... this is what you get .... when you mess with us.

The husband liked to perform vivisection on his registry, too. We were a mixed marriage; I was Mac and he was PC (actually, he was mainframe but he evolved). One could make the argument that Apple is more a consumer electronics company than a computer business these days, and repackaging old stuff as new stuff is part of the game...as it seems to be for a certain musician whose name we needn't mention...

Although implying that Apple is spending less effort on the computing side would be misleading.
Case in point - spend a year on Apple Mac Tiger or Panther and then a year on Microsoft VISTA (or any version of Windows really) and you will see first hand an infinitely superior product in terms of quality, rock solid reliability, interface design and usability.
That won't happen.
No, people will go ahead with their ipods and windows and then complain endlessly about their own self created misery.

As a matter of fact, I completely agree with you. The Macintosh user experience is far superior to the Vista, and I use both platforms all the time. I bought an iPhone because I got completely fed up with having a cell phone that I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to use. That's what has kept Apple competitive for all these years despite the higher prices they charge for their computers. So far as MP3 players are concerned, Apple owns it. And after watching my boss screw around for five minutes on his not-quite-an-iPhone trying to find a picture, I was secretly gleeful. Shadenfreude is, after all, an essential part of the user experience.

Apple might be light years ahead of the game Adam and I agree with you their products are brilliant ( I'm a big fan of their products ) but not everyone has the money to be early adopters when it comes to expensive new technology or even have the money to totally invest in a maker of a product that generally charges maybe a bit more than the competition, as such people with limited income might have no option but to see which format of something is going to be the more popular and cheaper before committing their hard earned funds into something. Remember the old VHS v Betamax scenario? Betamax was the better system but the inferior VHS due to the video rental market was the platform that took off.
Also Apple are guilty of trying to capture people who went for the more popular but inferior PC computers as opposed to their superior Macs, good for them I say! because they are in the business of selling as much of their products to whoever, otherwise they wouldn't have made ipods compatible with Windows.
The point is, whatever people choose, or however late they might be coming to something, they have their own personal reasons for doing so which doesn't ( or rather shouldn't ) give Apple the right to treat those customers like shit. The way they act has sod all to do with karma but everything to do with unethical profit making.
I take your point about cost. For me, the last time I payed anywhere near the full retail price for an Apple computer was decades ago. To offset my costs, I have bought second hand for the last 15 years... and for that, I think I've saved a small fortune compared to the PC alternative. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of Apple today, it's much harder to get bargains as before. A one year old computer used to save me about half the cost of new. That is much harder to achieve now. On the positive side, it also means Macs are holding their values - so good for those already in the door.

iPOD, tPOD and wigs fire burn down on them that use these instruments of death music. Scan music ended the reality for some people from the misfortune of the analog environment.

One pays a certain sonic penalty for the MP3 format, and people have complained for years that the digital sound is colder than analog. But when CDs came in in the Nineties, it meant you only had to invest a couple of bills in your player to get really good sound, as opposed to the thousands it took to get the best fidelity out of vinyl records.
