No doubt Bowie frequented this(hallowed)place. Some of the stories!
Anybody here ever been in?
I LOVE the club sounds from 1976 - '81. I went to a do last night where
they played a lot of disco tracks from this era. The dancefloor was packed
with all ages exemplifying how enduring these feel-good songs still are.

But I frequented The Wag, The Blitz, Billy's and such. They don't make 'em like they used to.

Hello Sweety,

September 13 2009, 10:46 PM

Lucky you! Blitz must've been the Mecca for the UK's equivalent to 54.
Did they play mainstream disco as well as glam and Bowie/electro?
Looking at the 'Blue Jean' video, the Wag club must've been filled with beauties too.

Nightclubs

September 14 2009, 12:02 AM

I remember going to a night club in York called Ziggys a few times, it was a load of terrace houses knocked through into one, it played a lot of David Bowie music I seem to remember.

I wonder if it's still going? Probably not sad.gif

I remember asking for some Bowie in a gay nightclub once and being told "we don't play him here mate". Instead it was high energy shite all night.

I remember back in the day when I used to be a walking postman going to a nightclub one night, and then a few of us went back to a mates house drinking, listening to Bowie, talking etc where we all ended up getting completely rat arsed, it was half four in the morning when we all went home, the trouble was I started work at half five!

I went home, got into my uniform and reported for work after having a cold shower slightly worse for wear, but still able to prep my round and get out onto delivery. All was going well until about halfway round I was putting some letters through a letter box that was right down near the floor, next thing this bloke was shaking me and asking if I was alright? I'd only gone and fell asleep on his doorstep for about an hour hadn't I!

I'd never getaway with it today, and needless to say in never did it again.

<< Lol!! <br> Good times eh >>

Too right! LOL!

We used to have night shifts where we used to take mail on and off passenger trains and the travelling post office trains (TPOs)there were often big gaps between arrivals so we all used to bugger off to the local night club which was virtually next to the railway station where they let you in for free if you were wearing your GPO uniform wink.gif The club would be full of posties wearing what we called teddy boy suits ( a light grey uniform with dark collars and cuffs ) and then every half hour or so it would just empty and then fill back up again etc LOL!

Happy days! wink.gif

I believe they stuck a Bowie impersonator into the alt-Studio 54 scene in 'Watchmen'. Must see if I can isolate it on DVD.
I recollect going to a lesbian nightclub with my sister, who was part of the arty-mimey-magician scene in the 80s. We looked like the female counterpart to Sparks in those days (until my future husband demanded that I give up ties), and I remember being appalled by the near-uniformity of Lacoste shirts on the habitués. I was straight as an arrow and still managed to be the dykiest girl in the room. Those days...

Don't look at the carpet

i was a blitz regular and sometime DJ .... the music was fuckin' great and bowie was well represented (more so when i was spinning).... i heard a great many other new sounds while i was there too.
studio 54 while iconic and now legendary was just a giant coke and celebrity fuelled gay disco. lots of photo ops and tabloid stories but not much in the way of music.

LOL! what I was meaning by that comment was that whilst I still work for Royal Mail, I'm no longer an actual postman because I transferred into the haulage side of the business where I drive the HGVs 100% all of the time.

But yes you could say the walking posties have it easier these days wink.gif some of those trolleys are even electrically powered I believe. In their defense though, they are carrying and delivering a hell of a lot more junk about with them these days, with less and less time given to them in order to complete, they very rarely miss out a house on their rounds these days which proves the lies that Royal Mail spins to the public that the business is struggling to gain work, especially when it's forced by law to have Royal Mail posties deliver the mail for contracts that our so called competitors gained from us because they bidded ridiculously cheap in order to gain the contract.

I agree with you about the junk mail, bit reminsicent of my sunday paper round with the supplements. Which gives rise to the thought of energy and natural (trees) waste on producing the paper it's printed on. Look at the deluge of loan offers for one example. This thing you mentioned about contracts and more work load seems to be mirrored in the fact that a lot of posties rush about, looking stressed and posting wrong letters in wrong doors. Is this something to do with inadequate training do you think? It seems that way with a lot of general labour now, especially young shop assistants - they haven't a clue what you're talking about when you ask for something specific.

About the trolleys, over in Darwen where my family live, there is a policy amongst the bin-men now that they will not move a bin if it can't be moved with the two index fingers. Straight up.

The training of a postie when getting shown round a new delivery has definitely been reduced, according to what I'm told by my colleagues who work in the delivery sections, but it's also to do with full timers being replaced with part timers. No disrespect to part timers many of whom do work hard, but a company like Royal Mail a business that depends and relies on full time, long term loyalty and dedication will never get the full time loyalty from part timers who don't have as many rights, protection and incentive to work that full timers enjoy, although it has improved a lot for part timers over the years thanks to our union fighting for them. People might disagree with me on that, but I will argue until the day I die that is the case. Also we shouldn't knock and throw away so called junk mail because very important stuff gets delivered by those services because bulk mailers get much cheaper rates, plus it's keeping the likes of me in a job! wink.gif

At the end of the day it's the same old story, Royal Mail and the UK government want to wash their hands of the postal business by down sizing it, running it on the cheap, cutting services, severely cuting wages, pay freeze everyone despite posting a record profit!! and by staffing it with part timers. not to mention opt out of their responsibilities towards our pension fund! Then they want to sell it off into the private sector where profit will count at all cost ( much more so than it does now ) which will result in the public paying a lot more for their post being sent and delivered, and the few services that are left being a hell of a lot more unreliable that what some people misguidedly think they are now.

The union recognises the need for change and modernisation in today's world, but they also insist that Royal Mails slash and burn policies are certainly not the way to do it and that it's an industry worth saving for the British public, hence why we are on limited strike action at the moment which is going to spread quite possibly across all parts of the business in the very near future sad.gif

It's up to whoever to decide who is telling the truth I suppose.

I agree with you about the shop workers BTW wink.gif that's why we all may as well just buy things off the Internet, at least you get proper information as to what it is you are buying on the net.

Re: M.T.

There were some great clubs in Manchester during the seventies !there was the Ranch bar, Pips ,and there used to be a wednesday night Bowie night at Bellevue .

The Ranch bar was the more cool Bowie place i m o ,people used to wear all the various Bowie ,Ferry , Reed looks off the day from roughly 75 to about 77 , although punk was sort of promoted it really killed off the old atmosphere due to its more gang mentality, I'd guess a lot of the people who had slagged the Bowie kids for hair colour and dress sense ,were now happy to don similar ideas [ makeup hairdye] due to the more aggresive stance punk had, though i m o you needed far bigger balls to try and emulate Bowie's looks because it was always viewed as being camp, fey, odd, whatever ? and not as gang orientated !

What was the music of Studio 54 surely not that awful disco , bee gee type nonsense ? or was it mare Sylvester and the like ?

I remember 'Pips' (whisper: 'behind the Cathedral')- what a sexy place that was! Everybody individual and a feast for the eyes. You got a few things there: the blokes suited and booted/feather-boa-ed or with trilbys and the women...........well sheeesh!!!!!! Debbie Harry clones, tall reedy Ziggy look-a-likes, blonde Germanic/Dietrich styles and storming tunes on top. Phhwwwoooaarrr!!!! Beautiful!

Studio 54 choice

September 14 2009, 10:35 AM

I assume most of the time it was more edgy stuff like Sylvester, Freeez, etc. rather than BeeGees. The songs 'Stomp' and 'Ooop Upside Your Head' and acompanying visions spring to mind.
I wish I could go back to the late 70's. As one poster on YT says, 'this was when New York was New York'.
