Milk is an exceptionally good movie. Very sad at times and makes you realise the enormous uphill struggle gay people had against the bigoted rightwing Christian movement in America.

Being a gay guy in America- this is a weird mixed bag for me.
There's a certain air of hypocrisy in Milk that bothers me. The film constructs a world where lesbians are almost non-existent, and you have an older white self-employed man telling a group of the same, "here's our first taste of power."

I signed up to work for Obama during the elections- and the one thing I learned about him is that he's far more patient than those that surround him. He doesn't freak out about "the big issues" and instead rides them out to eventually get his way after the hubbub has died down. He's not all that reactionary.
I think Obama will get to it when he feels like it. As long as he gets to it, I don't mind waiting- and hopefully we'll get health care in the mean time.

I have yet to see the film (mostly because i can't stand Sean Penn)...so i have no idea how Dan White was portrayed. On November 10, 1978, White resigned his seat as supervisor. As reasons, he cited his dissatisfaction with the corrupt inner-workings of San Francisco city politics, as well as the difficulty in making a living without a police officer's or firefighter's salary, neither of which jobs he could legally hold while serving as supervisor. He had opened a potato restaurant at Pier 39, which had failed to become profitable. On November 14, however, he reversed his position after his supporters lobbied him to withdraw his resignation and seek reappointment from San Francisco mayor George Moscone.
Moscone initially agreed to White's request, but later refused the reappointment at the urging of Milk and others who felt White was resisting their progressive agenda. On November 27, 1978, White went to San Francisco City Hall to meet with Moscone and make a final plea to get his job back. He arrived that day carrying a loaded gun, with 10 extra rounds of ammunition, and snuck into the building through a window, thereby circumventing the metal detectors of the recently installed security system. Upon entering Moscone's office, White began to plead to be reinstated as a supervisor, but Moscone turned down his request. White responded to this by shooting and killing Moscone. White then reloaded his weapon and walked over to Milk's office and shot him five times, killing him; he fired the final shot at very close range. He then fled City Hall and turned himself in at the Northern Police Station where he had been an officer. White recorded a tearful confession, stating, "I just shot him."

Scary a country like america and there is 50 million Americans without health insurance. That's why i love living in in Canada! I don't have to worry about losing my job-I can get EI if I can't find another one, which may not be great but it's better than nothing. I don't have to worry about breaking a bone, getting sick, seeing a doctor or a specialist, needing blood work or x-rays, having an operation, needing treatment for cancer or other terrible illnesses,none of those things will cost me money directly. High taxes are worth that security, to me.
In the film (as opposed to whatever was in anybody's head for real), Dan White was played as an angry closet case who shot Harvey Milk because he couldn't deal with it. It's a little more complex than mere homophobia - besides which, anyone fixing to take out all the gays in San Francisco is going to need more than one gun. And because they're Americans, more than a few of would be able to shoot back.
Far from hating my brother, I love him. He just didn't apply himself. He and millions of other Americans are looking to Obama to provide them
with tax funds to bail them out of a non-productive life. The healthcare bill would be paid on the backs of workers who never looked for a government handout nor when unemployed sat around waiting for the government to help them. What is galling to me is that despite the insurance industry's record profits (much of which went into the pockets of our American Congressmen), no effort was made to straighten out
the obvious ripoff from insurance companies. To deny medical coverage for pre-existing conditions, or put limitations on medical care should
have been the first thing B.O. went after. Instead, his socialist mentality kicked in such that working people will pick up the bill. I DO NOT
trust the insurance industry at all. It seems that every bill I get I have to fight to get them to change their payment to my policy coverage.
I DO NOT trust my government EVEN MORE. Regardless of party it seems everyone is on the take. Even local government is chock full of scammers
and kick-back thieves who when caught are never prosecuted and rarely are held accountable. My earlier point about goverment jobs is that most
that I know retire early with full or partial pensions (which rarely exist in the private sector). Their motivation and incentive is to survive long enough to get the free medical and pension. Those in public office get free cars, free gas, free travel, expense accounts, write-offs for second homes near their capital, and a sizeable salary regardless of whether a budget is balanced or not. I see little to no innovation happening in government jobs and I tend to hold them in low regard. God bless American people. God damn their "leadership".

Since this debate on the matter has started...i have spoken with many who have seen the film. They have all agreed that the film leans towards the idea he WAS a homophobe. I have now decided to check out the film (as much as i dislike Sean Penn).

Any movie bio tends toward the hagiographic, and the messiness and chaos of a person's life doesn't always fit neatly into two hours. Certainly, Mr. Milk's rather disorderly personal life didn't, as they say, make the cut, but I would hope that the filmmaker's decision to concentrate on the political, transformational story isn't read as hypocrisy.
Interesting as I didn't get that impression Nick. It actually shows Dan and Milk being on speaking terms and Dan inviting Harvey to his son's christening!

Not too shabby for 10 months. Supposedly, this is the best the economy has been since mid 2008. At least we have someone in office now who can relate to people on a sound down-to-earth basis. That's why Obama's so cool. Progress is progress. That, and the world finally gets universal and contemporary and now we have a cool First Family in office. Laura Bush looks at you like a recruiter for a cult . At least Michelle Obama comes off normal and comfortably-so through your t.v. and press. It'll get better yet .

The $8,000 federal tax credit for first time home buyers helped revive spendin gon housing, which increaded 23.4% in the third quater in contrast of 23.3% DECREASE in the second quarter.
The job market, however, is still depressed. The poor job market is discouraging Americans from increasing their spending by too much. Stagnant consumer demand and low consumer confidence have left companies wary of hiring more employees.
So there will take more time to overcome many years of economic neglect. AND MAJOR REFORM is needed now. And the fact the Republicans are happy to sit on the sidelines and play the opposition and snipe is also very discouraging.
HEALTH CARE REFORM IS AN IMPARITIVE for the economy to rebound.
So again, stats can be used in many forms, but what is undenieble is that there was a greater moral vacuum during the last 8 years that harkens back to the Nixon era of dirty tricks. Ask Cheney, he knows....outing a spy anyone, illegal wire tapping of large sectors of the US public. Torture....

I and many other concerned veterans and citizens attended the hearing today in Federal Court in Santa Ana in the lawsuit against Barack Obama to determine his eligibility to be President and Commander in Chief. About 150 people showed up, almost all in support of the lawsuit to demand that Obama release his birth certificate and other records that he has hidden from the American people.
Judge David Carter refused to hear Obama's request for dismissal. He indicated there was almost no chance that this case would be dismissed. Obama's attorneys argued this lawsuit was filed in the wrong court. Assuming Judge Carter denies Obama's motion for dismissal, he will likely then order expedited discovery of documents which will
allow the plaintiffs to demand Obama to produce his birth certificate in a timely manner, if he has one.
The judge, WHO IS A FORMER U.S. MARINE, repeated several times that this is A VERY SERIOUS CASE which must be resolved quickly so that the troops know that their Commander in Chief is eligible to hold that position and issue lawful orders to our military in this time of war. It looks like OBAMA MUST PROVE HIS ELIGIBILITY to the court. The judge said Americans deserve to know the truth about their President.
The two U.S. Attorneys representing Barack Obama tried to convince the judge this case was frivolous, but Judge Carter
would have none of it and cut them off several times. Obama's attorneys left the courtroom after the 90 minute hearing looking defeated and nervous.
The truth (FINALLY) about Barack Obama's eligibility will be known fairly soon - Judge Carter practically guaranteed it. This is a GREAT day for America and the U.S. Constitution!

Under jus soli even the children of illegal aliens are U.S. citizens at birth--just ask the pregnant women from Mexico near the end of their third trimester who try to sneak across the border in hopes their child will be born in a San Diego hospital and leave with a U.S. birth certificate clutched in his or her tiny hand.
Except for the children of diplomats, every child born in the U.S. is a natural-born U.S. citizen, period. The parents could be citizens themselves, could be from France, could be Coneheads. Nothing else matters. Only if the child is born OUTSIDE the United States to one citizen-parent does the issue of the parents' age, citizenship, or whatever, come into play.

But even such a law, however unlikely to pass, would not be retroactive. I am a fiscal conservative, an international conservative, and a social liberal. But I also can read either conservative or liberal points and learn from them. Whose fault is that? The President's biography and curriculum vitae are public record. You could find out anything you want about Obama by a simple Google search or a trip to your local library.

FOX News, of all outlets, managed somehow to be aware that Obama paid for his expensive Ivy League education through student loans, which were paid off by the proceeds of his book deals. That you, Mr. Pritchett, were unable to discover this is very interesting.

Is there an objective definition of what it means to be "culturally" an American? It seems from this that you apparently believe so, and you believe you have the authority to judge others by that standard and determine whether or not they pass muster. That is scary.

And this is relevant how? You assert that Obama is the first President that has scared you. That implies that Obama's predecessor did not scare you and that you deem George W. Bush a better chief executive than Obama. Bush's record of company management was not exactly stellar. If you prefer a President who proved a repeated failure in running a company to one who has never run a company to ruin, that is scary.

The response to this concern is similar to that above. If Obama scares you because he has never served in the military, were you likewise scared by Bush whose military experience amounted to a brief cushy stint in the Texas Air National Guard without ever seeing combat? How about his powerful Vice-President who could not volunteer for military service because he had "other priorities?"

I understand that it is common in conservative media to repeat allegations endlessly until they become memes irretrievably lodged in the public consciousness and thus accepted by many blindly as fact. However, it would be really nice if you happened to be able to name just one "radical extremist" with whom Obama had "aligned himself" and who "hate America" and "wish to see America fail."
While we're at it, what the heck does it mean to want America to "fail?" Fail at what? America is a nation-state, and as such its purpose is to protect the rights of its citizens and advance their general welfare, so I suppose America would "fail" if it defaulted on those goals. I don't know of anyone associated with Obama who actively seeks that outcome, but it's worth noting which party has been most consistently in favor of policies that restrict the freedoms of Americans based on their own narrowly-defined visions of "morality" and "tradition" and which benefit the most privileged strata of society to the exclusion (and all too often at the expense) of the working people who actually produce the wealth we enjoy. Moreover, it displays your ignorance: Obama has never suggested replacing the private health care system but rather augmenting it with a government-subsidized system for those who fall through the cracks. Our health care system as it stands now stinks. One has to wait ridiculously long to just get an appointment with a doctor in your network, and then you have to gamble about whether or not your insurance provider will grudgingly pay for the care you need. Insurance companies have no transparency or accountability, and I have yet to see any kind of convincing argument why a government-subsidized system would do any worse a job. Canadians and Europeans somehow manage just fine. One has to suspect that the root of what "scares" you is the fear that you will have to pay a little bit more of your wealth in taxes to help support programs for those who didn't have the good fortune to become Vice Presidents of major corporations with generous compensation packages. This is absurd, and short-sighted. These "vast oil, coal, and shale reserves" are not infinite. They will run out, probably sooner than we think. Maybe you think that "necessity is the mother of invention" and will trust in market forces to solve the fuel crisis once the world's economy completely collapses; common sense, however, would advise that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That you don't understand this is truly scary.

As for the notion that America has the highest standard of living and that capitalism makes this possible, how do you measure and determine that result? Is it taken by average? If so, I hope a businessman of your stature would understand the simple mathematical reality that the obscenely high standard of living enjoyed by our population's wealthy elite games the numbers when applied to rest of us. The wealthiest 1% of the US population owns 33% of the nation's wealth, and the top 10% own nearly 70%. I sort of get where the administration is coming from by having them happen in NYC, but it'll only hurt the survivors of the victims more than it will surely delight these sick f***s on trial for bombing us in the name of Allah or something..
