premature by a month i guess (nothing of note comes out after DEC1st) ... been talking to a lot of peeps recently about this. i will show you mine ... if you show me yours.

the first 2 are head and shoulders above the rest ...

1.PRIMARY COLOURS - THE HORRORS (their first album was a gothabilly freak out...this one produced by portisheads geoff barrow is much more fully formed...great broody melodic songs... joy division meets with modern beats and a dark sense of humour... "sea within a sea" is my song of the year)

2. EXPLODING HEAD - A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS ("the loudest band in new york go balls to the wall...mary chain meets the stooges)

3. SUMMER OF HATE - CROCODILES (more slinky , velvety , mary chainy indie rock)

4. BATTLE FOR THE SUN - PLACEBO ( not their best record ... a bid for the american market maybe ... but 5 killer songs)

5. WEST RYDER LUNATIC ASYLUM (still building on their trademark sound...still interesting and maybe ready to take over the top limey spot from oasis ... PTL)

6. HOREHOUND - DEAD WEATHER (The kills meet led zeppelin down in the missisipi mud)

7. THROUGH THE DEVIL SOFTLY - HOPE SANDOVAL (Hope doing what hope does best...sparkly)

8. MANOFAN - DAVID SYLVIAN ( atonal ... avant garde ... crushingly depressing ... but genius all the same).

9. HUSH - ASOBI SEKSU (Trippy japanese "nu gaze" with a pop sensibility ... straight outta brooklyn)

cant even get to ten this year but still waiting on the new EDITORS and BRETT ANDERSON to fill in the final spot. i hear that space oddity is quite nice BUT it is 40 yrs old people...been re visiting a lot of shoegaze and it's newer cousin Nu Gaze this year....great music but not strictly 2009.

Yeah, the new Editors is excellent. Appeared on the blogs over three weeks ago.

The new editors effort is very good. I recommend! Its very 80's. Seems a lot of bands are going this way. Franz Ferdinand went a bit retro electro on their last LP along with the likes of Keane and Bloc Party. Purists may argue it shows a lack of originality but it pleases my ears nonetheless.

Shoulder pads and wimpy burgers are next!

Rombouts coffee with your Wimpy? Very sophisticated. Can't remember that option in the Newport branch.

I had a long urge for a Wimpy handburger having fond memories as a kid. The onions used to be what made it! Then i finally had one not too long ago and...eh, it just wasn't the same.

I think some things should be left to nostalgia. Like the time a few years back when i downloaded a Commodore 64 emulator and was distinctly underwhelmed.

Some of my faves released this year (all downloaded off eMusic):

Kicks by 1990s (raunchy pop songs with hooks galore)
N2 by JJ (like a modern Stone Roses)
My Maudlin Career by Camera Obscura (dreamy mid-western country songs)
Bay of Pigs EP by Destroyer (Dan Bejar does it again in a disco-y direction this time)

<< i bought kindom of rust (and i have the other 2) but even though it is a solid album i didn't really connect with it >>

I've totally connected to it, its experimental and expansive with lots of over layers within its sound, all whilst carrying off a traditional rock type of sound. I love the first track called Jetstream which has elements of Kraftwerk within it, and of course the title track Kingdom Of Rust is an absolute classic (with a great video btw) with a magnificent subtle hook throughout, likewise the second single Winter Hill. To me it's a real grower like all their albums, and like all Doves work once it gets into your head it won't leave. You keep finding things like little details in the sound that you missed on previous listens.

I also have the others in which Last Broadcast is the other stand out album for me, its absolute class with Some Cities and Lost Souls backing up that and Kingdom Of Rust up solidly.

Doves are one of those groups who don't do it fancy, are quite ordinary guys from the north west but who make one hell of a brilliant sound, far better than how they were in their Sub Sub days.

Put it this way, compare the 4 Doves albums to Bowie's last 4 efforts and their is no contest. Bowie loses much as it pains me to say it, in fact Bowie could do a lot worse than listen to Kingdom Of Rust and Last Broadcast in order to get a new sense of direction and inspiration should he ever decide to make a new album.

Edit.... I forgot to mention their performance on BBC 2 Electric proms the other night with the London Bulgarian Choir was and inspirational and magnificent performance. happy.gif
