Just A Gigolo

I watched it for the first time over the weekend (It has been VERY difficult to track down over the last 20 years) and I have to say it really not as bad as it's been reported. Bowie is funny, incredible visually, and VERY 'Bowie', if you know what I mean. Like a good Michael Caine film where he just plays himself.

I love this film...

It's quirky and a bit wooden, but somehow has slipped into my fave category over the years.

I think the 'wooden' aspect makes it. It's a comedy, and playing like that adds to it. Like a Nazi Spinal Tap. And the music is cool.

And there's some nips in it.

I asked the head of a dvd releasing company about picking this up for UK release but he said its always been a poor seller and he wouldn't recoup his outlay. sad.gif

There's a dvd in Australia apparently but the print used is quite faded as it was damaged by fire.
I think the Dutch release is the one to go for which features the extended version as well as the theatrical version.

I thought Sydne Rome was lovely. happy.gif

"A Nazi Spinal Tap"

October 26 2009, 9:33 PM

Anything with a description like that deserves to be seen at least once. Where can one find that Torrent?

Just a .......

.. bit of a laugh. I have a copy, never look at it now. Hemmings must have been desperate casting Mr B in the lead role.

Hemmings is excellent in it. It took me a while to realise he was the chappie in Blow Up.

I've seen it just once when I was about 11 and I don't think I realised that it was supposed to be funny.

The German version and uncut English version ( on the same disc ) is the one to go for, also its got the best cover

Avoid the Australian version because its incomplete.

The best version is available on Amazon.co.uk now, ( one only ) priced at £11.99.

Edit..... The word is Nick Griffin is a fan of this film.

Even Bowie's promo interviews for it avoided mentioning it was a comedy.

I found it on Mininova...it's very deadpan in a way that the critics might not get. It feels like the Teutonic ancestor of 'Flight Of The Conchords'.

Even Bowie thought it was poor. He once described it as "my 32 Elvis movies rolled into one"

That's true, but because its so poor it actually turned out to be quite brilliant by happy coincidence.

For all Just A Gigolos faults I personally wouldn't have it made any other way.

I've never agreed with his view of it. I think he's just covering his back there. It's more like his 8 series of 'Allo Allo' all roled into one.

Was it 32?
Of course, when the press is slagging your movie, the polite thing is to smile and join in.
