Six teenagers have been bailed over a homophobic attack on an off-duty police officer.
James Parkes, 22, received multiple skull, eye socket and cheekbone fractures on Sunday night after being set upon by a gang in Liverpool.
Four 15-year-old boys, one 14 and one 17, were detained on Monday evening and have been released on police bail pending further inquiries, Merseyside Police said.
Pc Parkes was admitted to hospital with critical injuries and remains in a serious but stable condition.
He was attacked by a mob of up to 20 youths outside the Superstar Boudoir nightclub. All six are from the Kirkdale area of the city.
He was a Police Community Support Officer on Merseyside for a couple of years before joining the Merseyside force in May.
Detective Chief Inspector Tim Keelan appealed for witnesses to come forward. He said: "We are treating the assault as a homophobic hate crime and this incident shows there are still some people who have not learnt that crimes of this type are completely unacceptable."
"People who commit hate crimes can expect the full attention of the police and we will not rest until the offenders are brought to justice."
Merseyside Police said it has also stepped up high visibility patrols in the area to help reassure the public.

"...the police and we will not rest until the offenders are brought to justice."
Unfortunately the judiciary and the bleeding-heart social workers will make sure they get a sound slap on the wrist and counselling about not being naughty boys, instead of the 20 years hard labour on a rock farm in the western isles that they deserve.

No, actually, on second thoughts I'm a great believer in the punishment fitting the crime. One at a time they should have their heads kicked-in by half a dozen burly coppers wearing hob-nail boots. That'd teach 'em.
Inspector Gaylord Winterton said that "his men will not rest until the offenders are brought to orgasm..."
he continued ... "this young lad only recently joined the force having been enthused by our recent 'come pound the beat' camaign. It seems he may have misunderstood the phrase as his attempt to insert a truncheon into Sergeat Wilkins backside clearly demonstrates.
Bat's SO was a Policeman ,,Bashings are to me a very cowardly -low -life
thing to do ,,they have too much time on their hands ,,what-ever people are
it's their Life and life is hard enough ,,,WHO are they to judge ,what have
they doing with their Lives ,,I hope they take a look at the Guy who pressed them into doing this CRIME and why!! too cowardly to do it on his own.
bats
M.T..he's refering to me cos I said the police should be desperate to catch thugs no matter who they beat up, not just one of there own.
Of course, cos he's a shirt lifter he's thinks gays should be given more protection than everyone else. Its ok to beat up a hetrosexual in his eyes because that's not a hate crime. Beating up queers is.
I don't hate gays. They can't help wanting c**k.
But London Bye Ta Ta hates hetros and people of an opinion other than his own.

Oops! my mistake I honestly thought LBTT was replying to me it was just the way it read following my, I admit, tongue in cheek reply Ah! the perils of the Internet where the written word can often be mistaken for something it isnt actually saying, there really is no substitute for debating / arguing face to face with regards to whatever topic down the pub IMHO
On the subject on who the Police should catch, then my two Penny's worth is they should prioritise who they catch in equal measure, whether a person is gay, straight, bi sexual, a sexual, rich, poor, or whatever. We are all equal as human beings, and whats more we all pay our taxes ( at least those of us who are lucky enough to be employed do )in order to fund the police force.
