Like last weekend when I watched Just A Gigolo - this weekend I FINALLY set aside the time to watch Baal all the way through having previously only skipped through it to the songs. I really enjoyed it. It's VERY funny, very philosophical, and Bowie is quite excellent in the role. I think I acually prefered these readings of the songs than on the Baal EP.

I thought it was a good play with good performances but the direction by Alan Clarke was a bit lame. It was like everyone was filmed from 30 yards away. Instead of giving the studio bound production the illusion of wide spaces it was just annoying and I kept leaning forward toward the tv to compensate.

With Baal's obsession with the open sky it really should have been an outside production imo. Juliet Hammond and Zoe Wanamaker were good though as was Bowie.

Yes - that's the DVD I watched it on - although I have a bad VHS of the song clips since the late 80's.

The extra material on the DVD about the Elephant Man is excellent too. A shame there was no room for other themeatically similar cameos etc from the time.
