End of a decade approaches

2 months of the noughties left.

Am I missing something or is this the least anticipated new decade ever? Roll back 10 years and there were all heaps of fuss raised over the year 2000. In the world of pop there was Millennium by Robbie Williams, Will 2k by Will Smith, End of a Century by Blur, 1999 by Prince, Bowie's PMT (Pre Millenial Tension as he called it) on 1.Outside which was intended to be the first installment in a series of albums chronicling the end of the 20th century. Bowie was also lined up to do the 1st gig ever in 2000.

There were all the Y2K compliance concerns over The Millennium Bug, the divisive Millennium Dome, The Millennium Falcon (wink.gif) etc.. Loads of companies were cashing in on the fuss by adding millennium to their products or even company name.

Aside from Son Of Silence on here, I've not heard 1 person mention the end of this decade and it's less than 2 months away. I just about remember the fuss over the end of the 80's, there were parties and celebrations everywhere.

Maybe it's due to the anti-climax that was the year 2000 that we're a bit more cynical about the dawning of the next decade. I guess the recession also dampens our party spirits somewhat.

Anyway, I think that, musically, the noughties have been pretty good. Bowie did a lot of great stuff at the beginning of it and if you look beyond the reality pop stars there are lots of decent artists out there making great music.

Adios, noughties & roll on the teens(?)

What with the GFC and half the world in recession (and the other half just fucked anyway) I think people have simply forgotten that this decade is coming to an end. They're just too busy surviving the next couple of weeks to be bothered about the last ten years (or the next).

But you're right about the music, there's been some great things in this decade.

So what do we call next year?
Is it two thousand and ten or twenty ten?
Just a thought....

Cheers,
Jack

Not cynical. I'll be glad to see this decade pass.

Thanks to the apple-bombers and for-Allah suicide bombers and crazy terrorists (not to mention the ongoing war), the 2000's tended to suck big time. There's not too much positivity to be reminisce about, with all due respect (an opinion). Seeing how Y2K was a bunch of bullshite, and how the terrorists made 2001 so appealing... Bring on the 2010 decade. Yesterday.

Bring on the 2010 decade.

Or at least the couple of years before the end-of-the-world in 2012.

An REM comeback? I doubt it.
