Space Oddity 40th : The extras! The artwork! The sleevenotes!

I apologise for the apparent duplication (with the other thread), however there is method in my madness...

On the basis that the template set / being set here is likely to be followed for future releases what are your impressions of each of the above facets?

Appreciated, sleevenotes may be the lesser of three concerns, but I think discussing / evaluating all three is worthwhile.

There certainly is the suggestion that "Bowie's people" have, like MacDonalds, "been listening" or at least reading our concerns and taking them into account, given the mention of how the original vinyl was listened to closely in preparing this release, very likely an echo-ing of concerns over feedback re "Mewtillations", etc...

It's early days for me, just got it, but generally very impressed with Space Oddity 40th so far.

Ok the tacked on tracklisting needed some rubbing to get the glue off and then insert it behind the booklet, but that's a minor quibble.

On mine, the black and white pic of Bowie at Haddon Hall has a green splodge on it, a misprint it seems...possibly why it was sold (slightly) cheaper on ebay, but I have it now and overall it's very good indeed.

I am much more impressed with Conversation Piece in stereo...it felt a little too echo-ey at first, but I've come to like it a lot. The original (mono) single version seemed pleasant but slight to me, in comparison to the amazingly powerful and moving acoustic demo. However in this new stereo mix it works a lot better to my ears and recaptures a lot more of the demo's glory.

Ragazza Solo is interesting for the minor mix differences, and also the quality of Bowie's vocals too.

The longer and different mix of Memory of A Free Festival (album version) is interesting...in some ways it feels better with the drumbeat, and closer vocals...but I suspect it was dropped over concerns the hippy vibe to it may date it even more quickly? There's, erm, echoes (that word again!) of the Stones' hippy / psych dabblings of Satanic Majesties, reminding me slightly of 'Sing This All Together'.

Very nice selection of photographs : there are others from this era not included, but there's only so much space and they generally picked some of the best (the one taken to publicise the free festival could have been bigger, or is that a different pic from the same session?)...even the miniature reproductions of the single sleeves "works"...they do not really need bigger reproductions which would have squeezed out the sleevenotes. What I've read of the latter so far is interesting.

I like the inclusion of Bowie's sketch upon which George Underwood's back cover painting was based...I didn't realise it would have been planned like that, but it makes perfect sense. Is that a bird flying below Hermione, in the former, and is that a loch ness monster, rather than a whale? happy.gif

If there is any truth in the statement elsewhere that Bowie's health took a turn for the worst in recent years my best wishes to him and his family, and without meaning to seem insensitive I hope repackaging continues to be carried out with the care that has been taken here (it is worth adding that suggestions/implications Bowie would have difficulty talking are likely to be exaggerated I'm not at liberty to expand on this but I have heard from someone who had a discussion with him and there was no mention of him finding it difficult to talk).

Here's hoping the rest of the catalogue gets the respectful treatment this album now has, and let's have more opinions - positive or "constructive".

Did anyone else get the e-mail correcting the producer / composer info printed in the booklet?

They never quite get it right.

Interesting

November 5 2009, 11:01 AM

and true, they never quite get it right...BUT

what about the whole picture?

what did you think of the mastering of the extra tracks, or the album itself?

the presentation of the artwork?

It's easily the most pleasing of the special editions - unsure about the extras though. Some are excellent, but I'd like more info RE the alternate mixes - are they contempory or just done recently for the hell of it (the difference between necessary and pointless)? I think the best word for Disc 2 is 'lumpy'. Always interesting when they change their reissueing rules - eg not in a million years would I imagine them adding radio sessions to a Bowie reissue, which makes earlier anniversary issues look bad (Imagine ZS30 with a load of '72 sessions) but it looks good for the next theoretical few (HD40 and TMWSTW 40).

Fair points

November 5 2009, 11:24 AM

Yes, even I find the second disc a little patchy, and much as I love stereo mixes, I'm reminded of an old Lenny Henry joke ("you go into a record shop, they say, do you want the party mix, the accapella mix...I just want the one they got right!" happy.gif ).

However, while it would have been possible to jostle out the tracks duplicated from radio sessions etc and have more demos for instance (the whole "Beckenham Oddity" demo session would nto have gone amiss), it's clear by now Bowie has deep reservations about the quality of demos, and outtakes as a whole, so I think with that in mind we got the best we could.

Let's face it, most extra tracks are a hotch potch which will be met by varying opinions.

Anyway, I respect your opinion and do agree with it largely, just as I see why it's happened.

As for current mixes being pointless...interesting point whether they were done at the time or now...me, I don't mind new remixes as they reveal nuances, instrumentation (the Bowie "suck it to me!" at the start of Wild Eyed Boy was interesting to hear!) missing from the originals. For instance the different mix of Bewlay Brothers on the 1990's Hunky Dory reissue. They may not always be the take you want to hear, but can be fascinating in revealing some of the working process - the closest with Bowie we are likely to get to official releases of works in progress aside from the very occasional demo.

Any more comments?..the more we say now that matters to us, the better I reckon

Agreed. I think if the mixes are just 'interesting' to hear (which of course, they are) are they necessary to include on a CD rather than just an additional track on the download (for example) - something to hear, but not to include on the main programme of rare cuts?

I actually thought the alternate mixes were the highlight of the second disc. Some of them are beautiful.

In that case maybe next time they'll just stick on the theme from Chariots Of Fire.

"don't get me wrong" :)

November 5 2009, 11:29 PM

I think much of the second disc is beautiful, too.

Just some of it is overfamiliar (the radio sessions...and I still prefer the bootleg version), and Occasional Dream seems slow and not as good as the Beckenham Oddity version, tho it's growing on me...

An Occasional Dream

November 6 2009, 2:19 AM

Performing it slower is exactly WHY it sounds fantastic and fresh to mature ears. In sound quality, it far outstrips the bedroom demos while the performance seems to be more careful and in tune.

People desiring more 'sameness' to what we already know is a bit odd. I demand the most weirded arse demos possible and the quality of this demo, I was not expecting to turn up in the Bowie archive anytime soon. This is renewed hope for the future.

Talking of which, can anyone tell me what the difference is (apart from 2 seconds) between the original version of The Bewlay Brothers and The Bewlay Brothers Alternate mix on the 1990 RykoDisc reissue? Because I've never been able to hear any difference.

Most obviously, there is an extra guitar line over the intro. I think it should have gone on S&V 2003.

The effects are much more prominent in the remix, there's what sounds like a creaking chair right at the beginning for example which is much more prominent in the remix.

Actually

November 6 2009, 2:58 PM

yes, I've been coming round to that view.

I do want to hear demos that I've not heard, couldn't agree more!

however my hope for an official release of the Beckenham Oddity session seemed dashed, for now at least, and while no, I wasn't bitterly disappointed to hear something new / different, my initial reaction to An Occasional Dream was I didn't like it as more as the demo I was more familiar with.

But you are right, the sound quality is great, and I'm coming to like it more! happy.gif

I haven't had time for much leisure listening lately having been clearing out duplicate stuff for selling on ebay, but the 2nd disc has been on rotation for the last couple of days now since it arrived, and I'm getting over my over familiarity with the radio sessions now...here's hoping the mastering of the first disc is just right (I have a feeling it will be... happy.gif).

I guess....

November 7 2009, 12:38 PM

it's a foregone conclusion that most here would agree / hope for the same, but I hope this comes top / does very well in the reissue of the year polls in the music mags if they still do those (I don't buy them anymore .... got to the point where I've had my fill of them really!).

Re: I guess....

November 21 2009, 6:30 PM

Finally it arrived (one day after the official North American release date) listened to disc 1 early last night, yeah okay that was fine.
Disc 2 I'm part way through right now and I'm thoroughly enjoying the sound quality and
although I really like my Beckenham Oddity vinyl, this new disc is a beaut so clean, yumm.
I'll get in to the liner notes now, have a smoke...and consider what to do with that pesky sticker that is on the back.
