having lived a quarter century in both england and america i find it funny that english people dont see that they are exactly the same.except the english have that ridiculous royal family to dress it up in a little pageantry.
We're not the same at all. The British (or, at least, those that can hack living here) are a very different breed. We are more intelligent. And we kill our monarchs from time to time. How many Presidents have been killed by Americans? Too few.
i dont think you / we have killed that many monarchs in the last 200 yrs. cant really count the times before the USA existed.the english usually go into war right beside the americans and have even started a few pointless ones of their own (falklands anyone ?).there is plenty of racism in both places ... although you are unlkely to see the leader of the ku klux klan at "question time". there are very dumb people in both places (rednecks / lager louts) and plenty of smart ones too.at least the USA voted for an intelligent leader this time around.still waiting for the first black premier.
The Argentinians invaded a British colony. Thatcher was right to sink the Belgrano and show them Argies British supremacy. It wasn't pointless! how many British colonies have been invaded since? None! that's right.
Britain isn't waiting for a Black Premier, but if a Black man or woman gets in then that is okay. The alternative to Obama was what? I think Bush handed victory to Obama through his stupidity, there are those (not me) who probably feel that voting a black man in over a loon was about as desperate as it can get in the US. How about a First Lady?
how many british colonies have been invaded since ?
a better question would be ... are there any others left and why did we have them in the first place? of course those were the days when england was THE super power and all this yankophobia just comes across as misguided jealousy because the USA is THE super power now.of course empires always crash and burn. soon we will all have to start hating the chinese and caucasian americans are about to become a minority in "their own " country. i am sure real native americans will be able to see the humour in that.
Nations rise and fall, peoples gain and lose power, minorites become majorities and diminish again. We're starting to see a certain sense of embattlement among Americans who've always seen themselves as immovably on top and are now challenged in that view. When Britain's empire started to disintegrate you heard the same kind of whinging. Former Soviets still long for Stalin: "Okay, he killed millions but he did wonders for our self-esteem." I'm sure there's some recorded Latin griping about the arriviste Gauls crowding into Rome. So it goes.
The British Empire did not disintegrate EM, along with bodies such as The League of Nations it was carefully undone or de-colonized.
America did not want to take part as the Empire made them feel safe, as a result of Americas historical stance they adopted a foreign policy which now has half the world hating them. The wars being brought to their doorstep are a result of their inability to act decisively in foreign matters in the past.
Interesting...I remember Calabasas when it was still sort of countryside and contained a jungle park. It had an elephant shed where the mall now stands, more or less.
yep it's the age old story ... whoever has got the biggest guns (or the most soldiers)gets to take what they want. in the past it was salt, cotton, silk, spices and tobacco....now it's oil.
I was just up that way - I have a good friend on Peonia. I lived on Escobedo Drive until I went off to college and didn't see that street again until about thirty years later. Then I was: 'Jesus! How'd I drive up this goat track?' I imagine they've improved it beyond all recognition by now.
It's not quite that simple, some countries with low troop numbers have deadly weapons, some with high troop numbers don't have such deadly weapons. You generally find countries with high population numbers are high consumers and so on and so on. It doesn't have that much to do with weaponry. Economics is a far deadlier weapon these days, pull the plug and it's over, cut your finger and it will mend.
with that statement ... i think we can bring this quite civil political discussion to a close. it is nice to chat with intelligent people once in a while. imagine how hard it is for me .... surrounded by yanks !
Great to see you are taking the first steps to recovery at last.
