whilst taking a break from the polls to go and see final destination in 3d [man was that a sick film] i nipped in asda flicked through this months uncut mag with t-rex on the front & there in front of me, a full page advert for a bowie special - a guide to collecting the music of david bowie & other features, rare photos etc, full colour cover of bowie from 73 like the mojo special a few years back.
it's out on september 1st.
180 pages sounds pretty good to me.
just thought id let you all know.

Ah, the joys of living in France, a virtually Bowie free zone. It won't even get across the channel here, so I'm going to have to go through the hassle of explaining to my Mother what it is, why I want it, and why she should send it.

Mist.

"whilst taking a break from the polls to go and see final destination in 3d [man was that a sick film]"

Talking of sick films (other than the human centipede), I watched (after Daddy Day Care), I Spit On Your Grave. Lol - now I know it's like listening to Handl/Grieg and then Jayne County or Anal C*nts but there were bits where I just didn't really want to watch,. I am no prude but it really was so unnecessary. Anyone else come across such films.

YEP ONLY GOTTA WAIT TIL THURSDAY.
I'M DISAPPOINTED WITH THE COVER THO, IT'S ALREADY BEEN USED FOR A SPECIAL BEFORE I THINK IT WAS THE MOJO ONE, I THINK ITS A SUKITA SHOT I'M NOT SURE, THE ONE WITH HIS PAINTED NAILS SHOWING WITH ARMS CROSSED OVER HIS CHEST.
BUT 180 PAGES SOUNDS PRETTY TASTY, I HOPE THEY DO IT JUSTICE.

Fuck, it's sad that we're getting excited about something like this.

But it shows, bowie still sells.

Off to WH.Smiths then.

uncut

August 31 2011, 10:12 AM

i would think its a stand alone release not a freebie with uncut.
probably set us back at least £5.

a new look at bowies back catalogue, its always interesting to see what albums have been reassessed in more recent years.

hopefully full marks to tmwstw & lodger.

maybe even never let me down will get better press than it did before.

The Uncut web site is innocent of the Bowie Special at present - Pink Floyd is the latest (and looks pretty interesting). They may not post it for sale before it hits the streets.

yeh thats the one i was trying to describe.
hope that ain't a sign of things to come with the content inside, they could have been more imaginative & used a cover not done before.
could have used a more recent photo but not the one sucking a boiled sweet.

Are they aiming for nostalgia or are they thinking that photo could appeal to the Ggagaaga age gggroup ?

lol, I doubt young Lady Gaga fans go looking through music magazines, like Uncut and Mojo which for the most part is nostalgia.I bet if they saw it, they'd go who is this freak? Oh the irony. But then again alot of Gaga fans keep going on about Bowie just because she says she's influenced.

Yeah I really like the cover to be honest. happy.gif

got my copy

September 1 2011, 5:13 PM

had a quick flick thru.
nice ad on back inside cover for the sukita book.

i'm not happy with a lot of the markings like you hm.
the man who sold the world [title track} 3 stars??? come on.
ricochet only 2 stars ??? what the fuck. they were both number 1 songs in our compilation.

who are these people reviewing them? i've heard of a couple.

heathen and outside individual tracks marked up quite well.

odd that there is no mention of toy anywhere as far as i can see, alright i know its not official so can't really do a full page review, but i thought there would at least be a mention of it.

some scores on the doors.

September 1 2011, 10:30 PM

yes low has full marks look closely tho all except weeping wall 4 stars.

moonage daydream, star & soul love only 4 stars while everything else has 5 stars does this mean they are weaker songs, i don't think so i thought they were the better songs on ziggy.

suppose we are never gonna be happy about everything.

full marks for the young americans album except somebody up there & across the universe.

word on a wing only 3 stars this neil spencer bloke is saying thats the worst song on the station to station album, what a twat.

interesting to see at the start of the mag the uncut team have listed there favourite bowie songs the designer has gone for shes got medals, now that must be a real fan.

My other half said Bowie must be raking it in for doing nothing lol.

I see the news has finally filtered through to Bowienet. They have 10 copies as prizes in a competition, how desperate that site is. I can't see any adult Bowie fan getting excited over that LOL.

Yeah lee - I could be bothered to say WW got 4/5

The magazine is poor, of course - but just nice to get something new to look at.

I also take issue with the 'used' looking LP covers - some are quite poorly digitally 'weathered'.

Think I noticed a couple of pictures that were unfamiliar but nothing special tbh. There's no commentary on EMI, any plans, etc. we could have put something together more interesting probably.

The main ad is for Sukita's book at the back. If money is scarce don't bother. wink.gif

£8!

September 3 2011, 10:10 AM

bought mine yesterday - reluctantly I must say at that price. Only flicked through it as I am saving it for long train journey to London next week. First impression? Seen and read it all before but I am sucker for this stuff. Must be mad and I detest the cover. Why can't these people be creative? Why didn't I buy a good book instead?

bowie special

September 3 2011, 12:50 PM

yeah i must say after the initial excitement its a bit of a let down to be honest, recycled interviews, majority of pictures have been seen, there are a few new to these eyes, but it ain't worth £8.
most disappointed about a lot of the reviews, some are way off the scale imo.
and they could have done something for toy even tho its not official, it might as well be now.
yeh no plans from emi or any news is unfortunate.
your'e right us fans could have done it a lot better.

Do we all have our personal bloody midwives?

September 12 2011, 5:25 PM

Hi all,

I was afraid to be disappointed by this mag, but I'm not happy.gif Ok there's nothing really new in it, but there are some of his best interviews in there, and to have them reunited in a single mag is quite cool.

In the excellent interview of 1980, he briefly talks about the song "Teenage Wildlife", and the journalists asks him about the "midwives in history".Maybe because English is not my first language, I never really understood these lyrics, and Bowie's answer doesn't really help me!!

"
Journalist: "And who are "the midwives in history" who put on their bloody robes"?"

Bowie: "I have my own personal bloody midwives. We all have them. Mine shall remain nameless. For the sake of the song they're symbolic ; they're the ones who would not have you be fulfilled."

So what does he mean here?? Who are those bloody midwives after all?

Thanks for enlightening me happy.gif

Whoever that reviewer was saying Bowie sounded old, tired and breathless on Heathen is an idiot to be honest. (I just remembered from when I flicked through at WH Smiths, I'm not buying it, not for that price.

Bloody Midwives

September 12 2011, 5:51 PM

Hey there Gally!

I love this particular lyric in this very good song, and have these thoughts.

Midwives help deliver infants, especially during difficult pregnancies. They also help care for the child and mother after the pregnancy.

So the lyric is saying that the "midwives to history" are "putting on their bloody robes," robes with the blood from the numerous "bloody births" throughout history. That these mysterious people help usher new moments in history, help new moments come into being. That this has happened before, and will happen again.

But one should also keep in mind that birth is normally bloody, so Bowie's not just referring to violent or scary moments in history, but also natural, everyday, or possibly even banal moments in history.

It's so open to interpretation, that's why I love this song so much.

Yes its expensive, and yes its same old same old, but as the years roll by without db being active there will be less and less reason for magazines like Uncut to produce Bowie specials so enjoy them while they last.

Besides its only the price of a few pints isn't it wink.gif

It's not bad. Nothing new in it really, a couple of rare photos and interviews. It's worth £8 if you're going to keep it, but not if it's just going to be thrown in the magazine rack, or the bucket.

I'm enjoying dipping in and out. An interesting bit when in the '72 innterview Bowie discusses playing Hot Pants - for 'a lot of Mods in the audience'. I guess either an interesting hangover from his Davy Jones days, or just that they saw the new Ziggy hair and thought a kindred spirit.

@ Simon - yeah it looks like Geoffrey Alexander, but the timeline doesn`t fit. According to his book, he recieved a phone call to ask him to go on the 73 tour of America Japan and UK, in a matter of weeks ...... the `Lift Off` appearence was May/June 72 ???? A bit too early for Geoff, id suggest.
