I saw Lou Reed play the whole of New York at the London Palladium in 1989.

Ofcourse bands have been doing this all the time.
Take Pink Floyd, performing DSOTM integrally even before it was released!
And their The Wall show too... On their other tours they also played all songs of their current album.
Marillion played their albums also integrally.
There must be zillions of bands around doing this before Bowie showed up.
But yes, it was the first time Bowie actually did this...

OK - I just never noticed it unitil he did it. Probably because recently it has become a very fashionable thing for an artist to do.

Bowie was thinking of touring Young Americans, STS and Black Tie White Noise as an entire trilogy but if I remember correctly, he decided against it because STS was too short an album. He mentions it in a Q magazine interview from around 2002/2003.
