For a man with millions in the bank his wardrobe seems a bit limited these days. Great to see him out and about, and he does look well for his age happy.gif

New York looks a bit of a dump though. Don't the local authorities go around and clean up all the graffiti? Some might think it's art, I just think it looks a mess.

(( Really i can't see New York in these photos ? Its graffiti on a freaking dumpster parked on the street. ))

Ok then, don't american firms who own skips paint them up and cover the graffiti? or are they happy to just let their graffiti covered skips sit on road sides making the place look like a trash dump? I'm not saying it doesn't happen in the UK, but it does seem the USA are happy to tolerate graffiti much more than other countries and seem to take the view that it's not a high priority and it's considered somehow art. Or are the pictures of New York and other amerIcan areas that I regularly see on my TV on the news etc misleading and the graffiti covered subways etc are just an illusion? Like I said we have the problem here in the UK as well of course we do, but we do seem to put a slightly higher priority on things when it comes to painting over shitty graffiti.

If someone had a shitty graffiti skip like that dumped outside their house or premises here in the UK, then I don't think it would be too long before a complaint went in to the authorities about it. I assume this skip is somewhere near Bowies rather expensive penthouse apartment?

I agree about the Graffiti

August 2 2012, 4:57 PM

I doubt if you see it in Manhattan much these days. It usually sends out a signal for neighbourhoods running down. Crime and graffiti are linked. I must admit it wouldn't bother me too much to see it on a dumpster near me because I know the dumpster will be taken away. I'm sure you have to have a license these days to use them in GB (?). But totally understand were you're coming from.

Graffiti is part of big city life. City officials have more important issues to worry about, that's one reason why its not a high priority. For those of us who grew up in big cities like NYC, Philly, Chicago, Toronto, we are accustom to it, Modern graffiti art has been around big cities since the early 60s. a lot of us do in fact consider it art. I personally don't have a problem with it as long as its not hateful or tagging. I always stop to look at street art when i'm walking the alleyways of downtown Toronto.

Graffit as Art?

August 2 2012, 5:49 PM

Having managed housing I know how awful it can be for the residents who live with it. It's ok looking at it on a computer but living with it 24/7 can be a nusiance. It' also well researched( as I mentioned) graffati and crime are linked. It may be seen as more 'tolerbale' but it's still a crime.

@gabe.... I'm not against graffiti if it is genuinely nice to look at like the photos you have shown, after all I recently stated on here that I fancy going to Northern Ireland to witness first hand the political graffiti / paintings that were created during the troubles

However graffiti like that shown on that skip is a mess , created by some bored destructive youth who has no talent and who has only succeeded in making the country he / she lives I look like some sort of post nuclear war forbidden landscape.

It's not art it's friggin vandalism! Pure and simple.

You folks know that wearing black in New York is a city ordinance. That's how you can tell the tourists from the locals as to how cool they pull off that black look. I swear they may even give out monthly rewards for the best black outfit.

Boston is nicer and has better sports teams. wink.gif

seeing these reactions I have to agree that we are all craving for even the slightest news about the man.

His book is due out October if I recall correctly, so things should start to heat up ?
I imagine there will be some promotion for it, so I guess the author will be at a press conference.

Anyway, it's all over now... Most of us choose not to believe this, including myself...

What's going on with his left arm/hand? It doesn't seem to move or change shape in these photos. I've noticed too in these, and other recent pics, that his posture seems to be a bit stooped, not quite hunched over, but a bit top heavy. His left arm looks a bit strange, though.

Does anyone truly , honestly, really, believe that Bowies middle finger gesture whilst carrying a copy of Uncut magazine in different locations ISN'T a photoshop job??? All recent photos of Bowie have been pre-arranged beforehand. A passer by could never take such a series of clear shots in such rapid succession!

I don't think they were 'shopped. At some point the mag and CD (can anyone tell what the CD is?) was in his left hand with the back cover facing us. I suspect he realized he was being photographed, switched over and discreetly flipped the bird at the photographer. lol

Everyone wants to live there. That's why tiny studio apartment in Manhattan sells for 1 million bucks!!! I would love to live in Soho where Bowie lives. I can understand why Bowie picked Soho to live, its a another world down there. If i ever win the lottery i would buy a place in SOHO as well. I'm a 45 min flight from NYC so that will have to do for now.

All recent photos of Bowie have been pre-arranged beforehand. A passer by could never take such a series of clear shots in such rapid succession! "

As a retoucher, I think he was being papped, hence why he got peed off and gave the finger gesture after being followed and continually photographed.

Interesting to note that he is at number 7 on the icon list in the Uncut mag he's carrying.

No, I'm not!! Try making the middle finger yourself and see what shape the rest of your knuckles make. I guarantee that your hand will look nothing like Bowies hand does in these pics!

Perhaps he wasn't happy with his position and is walking around NYC giving a middle finger to the world!

Definitely a Frankenstein job.Zoom in 400% on the close up pic and you'll see clearly that the finger has been added. And the finger is made up of more than one piece too.Hence the unnatural bend at the end.

It was actually Ziggy Stardust, the album, that was no.7,not DB himself,as voted for by Robert Smith. The cd Bowie is holding came with the mag Retro-Raine,and is a Dylan covers album called Highway 61 Revisited.I thought it looked familiar.I must have outed it along with the Bowie covers one that came with another Uncut special.
Dylan was no.1 btw,as voted for by Patti Smith.

Absolutely it is.Look at the fingernail. The added piece even overlaps part of the lower finger knuckle. You can see the join clearly and it's pasted in at the wrong angle.

Sorry to have to mention my job again, but as a professional retoucher I would bet my house on the pics not being retouched. The lighting on his arm and hand is entirely consistent with the light hitting the rest of him in all the pics, even as the light changes direction. There is very little chance that someone could do it so well or even have a motivation for wanting to do it. Editorial pics receive very little post-production, no logos removed, no head-swaps, etc.. Otherwise they wouldn't be editorial.

Everything adds up, Bowie being followed, his stern expression & the middle finger eventually being raised.

If you want to see Bowie with a fake hand check out the awful retouching on the cover of Bowie at the Beeb, that is what a retouched hand looks like & it was done by a pro (Guy Peelart) who was paid to do it professionally.

Also, you'll notice the extended tendon above where the protruding finger is.

Would anybody remember to add in the tendon (which also has the correct lighting)?

Re: Whooop

August 5 2012, 9:39 AM

The other 'nail in the coffin' factor is that editorial photography must be true to life to be sold as photojournalism ( in this case newspapers, magazines, celebrity gossip websites) otherwise the photographer or publisher could get sued.

E.G. if a retoucher added a cigarette to a pic of Britney Spears with a baby to make up a story about her being a bad mum, she might learn of the photo, know it's been doctored and sue the publishers for defamation of character. Likewise, if Bowie learnt of these photos and they were (miraculously) retouched he could also sue the relevant publishers for printing lies about himself.

The photographer would have to produce the original raw files with exif data (date, aperture shutter speed info) from his camera, showing that they weren't doctored to avoid being sued. Raw files as captured by the camera are like negatives, can't be retouched, so are admissible as evidence.

Nonsense! You might be good at your job, or you might not be, it's no odds to me. What you can't argue with is the pretty clear line where the doctored finger attaches to Bowies original fist. (BTW, the tendon would already be there and visible, since he was making a fist. Again, try it with your own hand!)

In the doctored photo, the finger appears to protrode from below the knuckle rather than extending from it as it should.I would concede that that might be an illusion if it weren't for the obviously stuck on fingernail piece.
Just showed it to the girls and they too can see it clear as day.

First impressions

August 5 2012, 1:25 PM

@popp & gabe

I appreciate what you are both saying about NYC being a vibrant and exciting place but surely you can't both deny that this constant vandal type of graffiti that seems to be everywhere is a major eyesore. sad.gif

No I have never been to NYC that's true, but what I keep seeing graffiti wise does kind of put me off wanting to go. Seriously! it makes the place seem sinnister somehow which is probably not how NYC is but first impressions count for a lot.

I must admit his arm does look kind of paralyzed, could this bear out the rumours of db suffering a stroke since this can be an after effect of one?

Either way it might be an idea Bowie or someone connected to him finally comes out officially to either confirm it or deny it if only to stop us wondering, playing detective, or as fans being naturally concerned and worried.

@Noel. His health isn't our business in the greater scheme of things, but since he is a famous music artist with legions of faithful fans who ARE worried, isn't it simply polite and caring to let those fans know if the roumours are true or not?

The rules are a little bit different when you have made a living by being in the public eye for most of your career / life and have used that to involve fans to take personal interest in you. It's selfish and unfair to leave those dedicated fans in limbo worrying themselves to death.

Just my opinion of course.

It's a fair point about Garbo etc and I accept the view that Bowie is in someways entitled to his Garbo moment, but as gabe alludes there is intense media speculation 24/7, the Internet encourages roumour and counter rumour and all the rest of it.

Today's world is a bit of a game changer. I can see the argument for both sides, I suppose it depends on what we think as individuals what is the morally right thing to do.

Crikey, even more crazy theories! Bowie's left handed but using his right arm to open the cab door as it is hinged on the right. Picture yourself doing the same.. A car door with the hinge on the right, which would be the easiest arm to use to open it, as the door swings out to the right?

His left arm looks completely normal to me, it might be semi-hanging down, but what else would it be doing? On his hip, giving another nazi salute, picking his nose?

My thoughts exactly! lol Thank you for saying that.

I know he's had a health scare before and he's getting older, so naturally fans are going to worry about his well being. But I still think that sometimes people go a bit overboard with the over analysis of every little thing... He's standing on the side of the street in NYC waiting for a cab, what exactly should he be doing with his arm? If he's not flailing it or something, that means he's paralyzed from a stroke? Way to read way too much into things. He looks fine. I'd say he looks really well for his age.

I speak as a witness to end-stage liver disease: you don't turn brown, you turn Simpsons yellow. Not to say Iggy doesn't have it, but his deep tan is more likely a side effect of living in Florida. BTW, it's Addison's disease that turns you dark and that's thyroid.

Glad to see Mr. Bowie still has the use of his fingers, but yeah, he's left-handed. One might expect to see him use it - has anyone seen him sign an autograph lately?

this old chestnut....

August 7 2012, 8:05 PM

It's a delicious thing to think about as ever [does this board ever stop on this subject?]

But isn't it great that he's a bit - a bit - of a modern day Garbo?

Retired more or less on his own terms, to do as he pleases and spend time with his family. Living quietly in one of the most vibrant and busy cities on the planet?

If he doesn't want to release anything, then who are we, etc, eh?

That's the nature of stardom. Fans have no right to anything except the experience of the art once it is 'out there'. If you disagree, then go out and do it yourself. No, of course not, so few people can. So we get what we're given.

But I wouldn't bet against something. Maybe. Sometime. It wouldn't please everyone though.

There is no denying that it does look like he is holding his arm a bit funny especially notiiceable in the 2nd last photo. Its probably just the way the camera has caught him at that moment in time? but the way he is holding his left arm does look kind a weird so we can hardly blame ourselves for wondering. It's a perfectly natural thing to do as far as I'm concerned.

What should he do with his left arm? Put it in his pocket? wink.gif

Here's a thing! In the last photo he looks like he has a bit of an old man stoop, you know slightly bow legged. I wonder if he is suffering from a bit of arthritis in his old age? wink.gif

If this is referring to what I said, absolutely. wink.gif Perfectly natural to wonder about things. He's older and he's been ill before. While I don't really see anything that can't be chalked up to capturing photos in awkward timing, I suppose I can see why some would speculate. I guess after a while, with so many rumors of Alzheimer's, strokes, cancer, paralysis, etc., with no real basis for assumption, it all just gets old... and repetitive...
