The school play was just before Xmas. I know someone who was there and Bowie was laughing and joking and acting like a regular New Yorker with the rest of the parents! (In otherwords mugging them and dealing drugs!!
Mist.

"3/Credibility issue performing with Spice Girls etc... "
well it can't be that as the list of acts was held with great secrecy until the day before.

1/Voice out of practice
2/Availability / Cost of band / band time practice
3/Credibility issue performing with Spice Girls etc...
4/His health
5/The fact he lives in NYC
and most importantly....
6/ If he ever does return to to the stage it will be on his terms.
1 and 2 - we can discount. Preparations have been ongoing for 7 years. He would have been contacted at least a year ago, giving him ample time to practice or arrange a band, assuming he wouldn't just use another band already at the ceremony. Remember he sang Heroes with Queen and Mick Ronson 20 years ago, and sang Five Years with Arcade Fire 7 years ago.
3 - we can also discount, for the reason Brian gave.
4 - most likely reason
5 - not really a likely reason, such a big event that if he wanted to he would have travelled over for the biggest audience of his life
6 - waiting to return on his terms? 5 years since last live appearance, 65 now, doubt he's biding his time.
Still think he's retired either due to his health or that he simply doesn't want to perform any more or tarnish his legacy by performing as an old man. I guess I just feel a little sad as not performing at this event confirmed what I suspected. Still, good for him. He deserves his own private life now.

I tend to agree with Alan and Mick's comments.
The persistent silence from db suggests it's health and/or a lack of real motivation or interest.
If there is an announcement in Sept (Big IF), I hope it's something for fans to look forward to, such as a book, website or even dare I suggest... music (from the Vaults obviously)

Allow me to sound a quaint, maudlin note...is there some sort of patriotic duty to answer you nation of birth's request for such an auspicious occasion? I mean, you're an entertainer.
No? Okay it only was just a thought.

(( The show can go on without his real presence, now he is just a virtual person...))
Was the opening cartoon of Bowie and the band at the beginning of the Reality tour concerts much more important in terms of pointing towards the future than we first thought.
