It should've been that cover defaced! Although would probably cost too much and that Sukita book is still on the racks.

I'm genuinely shocked and saddened it is so ugly.

i love the cover. he's a graffiti artist. it will keep people scratching their heads. the fact that some people have such a violent reaction to it means that it has done its job.

i understand the reaction but listen...just smoke some buddha. it will all make sense.

totally love it...i prefer it to the reality artwork. maybe he was going for the same vibe...[sound fx of someone tokin' on the chronic] but he nailed it here....

i love it...it's a piece of art.

all very interesting....

January 8 2013, 10:21 PM

if you subscribe to the view - as i do - that bowie has always separated making his music from how it's presented on release - he makes it first then decides what the cover's going to look like - i think......he wanted a difficult cover, a simple image, but something at least partly familiar, subliminally connecting to his past but trashing it in the name of the future - he's called the record The Next Day, you can't get much clearer than that. So whilst I see it and think hmm what have you done to my fave pic of you, it's a very clear "statement". Also I think alot about today - the vid, the mood of the single, the cover - is almost tentative as if he's saying "Remember me?" to the wider audience, pushing some buttons as he says he's still here and yes 10 years older. Not us fanboys who need reminding of course. We're too busy saying thanks.

I think I failed to see the funny side at first Lee. I love the way the original title just has a line through it. Feels like shedding skins or something.

The Cover

January 8 2013, 11:33 PM

I'm not fond of it. To me it is ugly in itself, too conceptual and not anywhere near iconic enough. There is an argument that if you have to go to some length to explain the idea behind it then it's not working. Heathen made a strong visual statement and was the last 'great' cover for my money . . .

There are the similarities with heathen you notice, the eyes or lack of & the obscuring of sight.
I think its very clever i love it.
Its doing its job when theres all these different opinions and conclusions drawn.

I have no massive connection to the Heroes cover (it's odd but striking) and I'm not too fond of 50% of that album (although my favs from it are among my all time Bowie favs - Joe The Lion, SOTSA, V2), I just think this is cheap and ugly. I know Bowie's entire output needs to be taken in context of his career for maximum impact but there is just no need for a cheap sleeve especially from a man who pretty much defined it as an artform. Yes, I'm sure this is 'art' but it's also onpar with those bad 70s and 80s rock albums with joke covers that just haven't aged well.

Or maybe its so no fucker will do that sleeve face thing happy.gif

i like it :)

jonathan barnbrook also did the cover art for heathen and reality.
all three of these albums are like a trilogy to me.
loved that he also referenced beckett's waiting for godot on his blog.

I don't like the cover I'm afraid. A bit cheap and unlike Bowie to do so.
What about the image that is on davidbowie.com, the facial shot with the square in front of him ?

I figured that would be the cover ?

I think some are missing the point using the defaced heroes sleeve sums it up perfectly.

sorry . . .

January 9 2013, 12:23 PM

it's not defaced (like the heathen artwork), it's covered up or obscured. If the object was defacement there are better ways to distress it . . .
