Jokes. Brixton needs to hang onto itself.

I think it would look rather nice on the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square.

Is that some kind of a joke?

The Brixton tribute last year was very touching, & a memorial would be lovely, but- if anywhere in the UK can claim Bowie as theirs (& I'd argue no-where really) then it's surely Bromley, the town he actually grew up in, as opposed to a suburb which he left as a very young child.

I don't think Brixton are claiming him as THEIRS. They just want to install a memorial. What's wrong with that?

He was born there.

The conceptual illustrations are alluring but it seems too big for the location. It hangs over the street too far. One large vehicle clipping the corner and the whole thing snaps off.
Perhaps it should be scaled down a bit and mounted on a column. happy.gif

As for ongoing maintenance, it'll soon be covered in guano... the birds will just love such a tall, out-of-reach place to sit'n'sh*t.

It's a pedestrianised street so a truck ain't gonna clip it. All public monuments get bird lime dropped on it st some point. As for too big for the space, sometimes things work for precisely that reason. There are no rules.

Dolly Parton was told by her father when a statue was erected in her home town that however famous you are you're just a toilet for the pigeons.

Brixton is perceived as way cooler a place than Bromley, irrespective of how much time he spent where, but they'll never raise the amount they're after.

i think the middle-aged man who lives in a house with a David Bowie poster on his wall is right: it's a silly idea.

I think it's f*cking excellent. Much better than some bronze statue that would end up looking like David Brighton.

it's not either or - it's neither.

Why can't enjoying the fellow's music (and, if you like, other work) be enough? Why insist on cluttering a high street with an abomination or emoting all over the place about what 'he' meant to you?

I bend at the knee to no-one in my admiration of the Dame's finest records, but none of this nonsense is about that or him - it's about attention seeking individuals.

I totally agree with iggyziggy3.
I love it - I just don't understand how on earth it will cost £990,000 for this to happen.
They haven't even got planning permission yet, have they?

An artist friend who specialises in fabricating and installing public artworks in the UK tells me a steel structure of that size, with artist and other relevant fees, plus freight and groundworks (i.e. Installing a cruciform to support it) would come in at around the £200k region.

Honestly I think its ridiculously garrish. Cant they think of something better? How about a book store in his name ,or an art gallery or something....there's more Bowie in that than the lightning flash. I prefer commemorating Bowie the artist over commemorating just a small part of who he was. Plus it really does look as it could cause accidents.
