I don't think any of them are rolling in dough but some are in good shape and I'm sure there's some that are not.

You hear wrong. Neepawa broke even this season and did not incur any debt the previous season, which was the first for the new ownership group. Not rolling in money, but not broke.

The Blues owners may have deeeeep pockets but they also have short arms. That team is a mess and only draw about 75 fans per night. Not enough to pay the ice rental and refs etc.

there should be revenue sharing based on attendance.
i.e. the wpg teams should get nothing, but the mid-sized rural teams could use a little help from the bigger centres
not a lot, just a little helping hand
disagree? fine. but who are the big centres going to play if teams start folding.

Don't agree with revenue sharing as why should any team have to subsidize one who doesn't do any fundraising etc. If that happened some would do even less. It's too bad that a team has to be run like a business now because of the high cost of everything. A budget of $50000 looked pretty good a few years ago but now thats all been shot to he--. I know it's hard on the smaller centres but guess thats life.

Not bull****, I was obviously given wrong info by an exec member. I did not see the Banner, but that sounds pretty serious.

Neepawa

June 28 2009, 11:34 PM

Of course finances were front and centre and most reports reflected the tremendous efforts put in by the board and volunteers to raise the funds to try and keep the team operating in Neepawa.

Overall in the 2008-09 season, the Natives had operating revenues of approximately $273,000 and expenses of $297,000 which left them with a $24,000 loss. Combined with a loss from the previous year, the team is now about $45,000 in debt since the present community group took over the teams operations from Gaynor Vivian two years ago.

The importance of the work put in by the board and volunteers to raise funds stands out when only about 23% or $62,000 of the teams income was generated from either season ticket sales or gate receipts. That wasnt even enough to pay for billeting players ($40,000), league fees ($17,000) and referees ($9,600) let along pay for salaries, transportation and travel, scouting, equipment, ice rental, etc., etc.

With fund raising already nearly stretched to the limit an increase in attendance will be needed to keep the team viable and the board will be looking to the new General Manager and Head Coach to improve the product on the ice which should hopefully translate into more bodies in the stands. The team also plans to promote the 2009-10 campaign as the Natives 20th anniversary season and conduct a major lottery draw.
