Easy Answer

June 9 2009, 9:17 AM

No superstars this season, going to be harder to coach, so he just gave up.

I could have coached the RBC Steelers team and got a win at least, hey Kenny, I'll take the job.

For the most part, the only players Cassidy talked to, the last 2 seasons, were the RBC vets. They're all gone now (except for Pawluk), and now its just a team of "nobodys". I'm sure his stated reasons for quitting are valid, but maybe its also that he's not interested in coaching the group thats there now

40 isn't bad for a full time job (which coaching in the MJ is) but you can make 25 waiting tables in a good restaurant! Thee are a few coaches in this league making quite a bit more then that.

gets paid on commission for the marketing, sell get paid...funny how everyone doesn't want to work anymore...I know guys who work on straight commission and make 6 figures in the hockey business. I am not saying you could with the steel but 10-20 k additional would be fairly simple...now that's a full time job anywhere

yeah it'd be easy - if you said he was gonna get 20% commission, the guy would have to sell $100,000 worth of sponsorship. I'm doubting there's that kinda money laying around in Selkirk. I'm doubting anyone would quit there day job to chase ghosts.

June 9 2009, 3:14 PM

How much do you think a mjhl coach should get?
$100k, This league is a stepping stone for someone to get to the next level. There is a price to pay for that opportunity, it's paying your dues, sucking it up...it's not for everyone so if Keith or Bob or Mike or whoever doesn't to coach for a certain dollar amount someone else will who is looking for an opportunity. This not the bc junior league, whl or the nhl....It is what it is....

Re: $$

June 9 2009, 3:20 PM

READ before typing - no one said anyone wanted 100K - they said to earn $20,000 he'd have to sell $100,000 worth of advertising.
And yeah the league is a stepping stone - no one said it wasn't. Seems Cassidy decided he'd sacrificed enough for the last 5 years and has decided to move on - didn't sound from the interview like he was bitter, just deciding he was going to concentrate on other things other than hockey.

Re: Cassidy

June 10 2009, 5:22 PM

Some interesting names surfaced on BIG FM this morning during an interview that Walker did with Bob Summerfeld (Steelers rink announcer).

Seems that most in Selkirk had just assumed that Cassidy was returning, as Ray broke him the news he was completely unaware.

They talked about possible replacements for Cassidy. Ray Neufeld who was the Steelers color commentator the last two seasons would have been a most logical choice, but they seemed to think the Blues had already comfirmed him for thier coaching staff.

The names mentioned on-air included;

- Doug Hedley
- Jamie Leach
- Kevin Benson
- Paul Krueger

and some locals on the list ...

Chris Poponick of the Selkirk Jr B Fishermen
Johan Arnasson of the Selkirk Rivermen Sr.

even, Rick Bender`s name was again mentioned.

It`ll be an interesting test for the Steelers!

Selkirk would be crazy to hire Nuefeld.Look at his track record & the wonders he did in southeast.Just cause he played in the Nhl doesnt mean he's a good coach. If he was that good why would Dauphin let him go?

Makes you wonder what's going on in Selkirk. Over the last eight or nine years there have been a number of coaches, most of whom have walked away:
Ridley
Goodbrandson
Brown
Stokes
Loewen
Bender
Cassidy

You could say the same for every other team in every other junior league as well. Its not a high paying position as a coach in the MJ,sj.aj.etc. So guys just seem to stick around a couple of years until they figure out they arent going to get rich then move on.

Still more from Wednesday . . .
F Joel Lowry, the son of Calgary Hitmen head coach Dave Lowry, has agreed to play for the BCHLs Victoria Grizzlies this season. Joel, whose WHL rights belong to the Red Deer Rebels, played last season with the Calgary Buffaloes, who won the Alberta midget championship.
---
The MJHLs Winnipeg Saints are without a general manager and a head coach. . . . General manager Wayne Anderson has retired after nine seasons. . . . Head coach Doug Stokes has retired in order to focus on his health after having bypass surgery (hey, Doug, eat lots of seafood, but dont touch the shrimp.) . . . Hmm. Might Keith Cassidy, who recently left the Selkirk Steelers after three years as their head coach, end up with the Saints?
---
The WHLs Everett Silvertips are getting some company in the Comcast Arena. The Stealth, a National Lacrosse League franchise that has spent six seasons in San Jose, is moving to Everett. The indoor lacrosse team will announce a new nickname next week. The NLL season begins in January.
---
The best news I heard Wednesday involved the SJHLs Weyburn Red Wings. Yes, Dwight McMillan will be back for another season as the teams head coach. McMillan, who got his 1,000th victory on Feb. 1, 2008, has been coaching the Red Wings seemingly forever. Well, not quite that long, but he was the SJHLs coach of the year for 1984-85. . . . I believe he has been coaching the Red Wings since 1972, which may be the longest run of any active coach with one team. . . . With 1,000 coaching victories, McMillan is keeping company with the likes of Scotty Bowman and Brian Kilrea and . . .
And you cant mention McMillan without dropping the name of general manager Ron Rumball. Those two go together like bacon and eggs. And, oh, the stories they can tell!
Gentlemen, take notes and write a book. Please!
