Gross is almost never for beaking a ref, unless he threatened him. It is usually spitting, a vulgar gesture or taking off your lid to fight.

He got a 10-min major first; then as he was heading off to the penalty box (chirping the whole time) he was def. talking to the referee and that's what probably got him in trouble.
