You can try things similar to the tinkering aspects of paintball. Hobbies where small mechanics, machining, and building come into the picture. A few I can think of are:
-r/c cars/planes (i have an HPI Nitro RS4)
-machining/metalworking (lucrative)
-cars (more $$$ but definitely attuned to mechanical ingenuity)
-battlebots
You may wanna choose a hobby without outside influence though. After all, it is a hobby! If it has nothing to do with paintball or tinkering, then oh well! Whatever makes you happy...
