The kitten was killed for no reason. Cows are killed because we eat them. They're an effective (and tasty) source of meat. You couldn't effectively raise cats for meat. At least not on a massive scale like cows. There just isn't much to them (there are a bunch of other factors too but I won't get into that). Hence the use of cows, pigs, and other large animals.
