There's a reason for not using cruel and tortuous punishments
by Someone
It's not because the perpetrators don't deserve it. (A pedophile who kills his victims deserves no mercy)
It's not because we don't have enough practice at devising such punishments.
Simply the dehumanizing effects on the people and the culture who practice such things.
For example, the death penalty should be swift, certain, and private, even for the most heinious murderers. Public executions turn into a circus, and I can think of few non-violent punishments crueler than putting someone in solitary, living in his cell for 23 hours a day, for 60+ years.
For this guy, sentence him to 1-2 years and put him in the prison's general population. He's immediately close to the bottom of the prison pecking order, and the other inmates will apply plenty of correction themselves.
