IIRC, estimates have shown that the potential oil fields in the Gulf could be as big as 20 times the size of the largest fields in the middle east.

Unfortunately we (the USA) are not being permitted to drill there due to ecological concerns by special interest groups. However, it is very likely that China will be drilling for oil there very soon.
