Since you have to ask...

I will approach this from a point of personal spirituality...

I eat meat. I do so with the solemn knowledge that an animal gave its life for the meal I ate.

Because I have the highest respect and gratitude to those animals I cook and eat all kinds of meat, meaning "cheap" cuts and offal. I do my part to see that livestock doesn't have usable meat tossed out as waste. I wear and use leather as clothing and other soft goods. I have taken the lives of wild animals in order to consume them so I don't come from a place of hypocrisy where the issues of hunting and fishing are concerned. I am willing to kill animals for food myself.

I have and old friend who spent a lions share of his career as a butcher, working every stage from dispatch to retail. He was always found of saying "we don't kick them in the nuts before we kill them. It's a coarse statement, but it is brimming with honesty. Livestock is dispatched as quickly and cleanly as possible, with the purpose of maintaining lives of other beings.

The dirt bag that is being discussed violated all of those tenants. His intent was to hurt the animal with the purpose of hurting and intimidating others.

Intent matters.
