Think of it as the electric panel, only for your water supply. Every fixture in the house will have its own pipe running directly to that manifold. The pipe is plastic tubing that you just unroll, much like wire. I don't care for the stuff myself. If you happen to get a freeze up there is no way to easily thaw the stuff without opening walls. Also, I think it takes all the skill out of a skilled trade.
