a lot of states here on the east coast have anti hitchhiking laws. you could buy a used 500cc motor bike and put some saddle bags on it and go anywhere you want. a lot of state koa camp grounds are 10.00 a night to toss a tent and have showers.some now have cabins if your a end of the season or winter camper. or you can find and old tear drop camper or build one.
