Do some serious parts book work, they might exist. (Funny story)

by

I've been bitten by this one MANY times for cars, trucks, appliances... They just look up the part for your bike and the book says "Out Of Stock" or "It never existed" and they stop looking. Boom, done, go away and stop wasting my time.

They need to do the cross to the factory ordering numbers, then see what else that root part fits on. Then go to the books on the other models on that list, and see what THEY say on replacement parts. Go through the replacement lock sets they do have and look at all the bikes it fits - do any of those have a common ancestry with yours?

Sometimes there's a valid cross or substitution listed in the new book for the new bikes, but they don't go through all the old books and change thousands of old entries to point to the new part - let alone reissue the old books.

Or they never thought you'd EVER want to do that - "You can't put a Speedometer on a FL350 Odyssey! It won't fit. Only an Odometer."

I respond: "But you can put a Speedometer OR an Odometer on these Quads." Parts man says "But the part numbers are different..." I say "Keep digging." Parts man: "Oh wait, the retail numbers are different, but the master part number is the same for those Odometers..." "Good! Get me one Speedometer for a Quad, and the cable & drive gear kit for the FL350."

Went together like it belonged, and it works just fine. And it really blew the mind of the guys at the ACSC Auto Club Speedometer Check folks when I pulled up with the trailer and started unloading - and doubly so when it was spot on with the stock tires. Still have the calibration card in with the registration.

One of these days some Gung-Ho Park Ranger or Local Yokel is going to try popping me for speed limit on one of the entry roads or the parking lot... "Do you have any idea how fast you were going?" "Why yes, Ossifer - Yes, I DO. Exactly, and I can prove it."

"Uhmmmm... Errrr... Ahhh... Have a nice day."
