Sawstop doesn't actually make the saw - "Made by a Taiwanese power tool manufacturer"(I STRONGLY suspect Powermatic, because of similarity in appearance between the PM66 and the Sawstop ICS). It adds a hefty bit to the price - a PM66, when they were in production was around 2 grand and came with a fence. A Sawstop ICS is 2500, plus you have to buy a fence.
And oh, the guy that invented the tech, Steve Gass, is a rent seeking asshole. When the major manufacturers showed no interest in his invention, he went to the CPSC and tried to have them recall every saw in the US not equipped with his technology. When that didn't work, he's done a series of interviews, all trying to paint the manufacturers as greedy bastards(neglecting to mention how much per unit he's demanding in royalties - of course, if it was really about safety and not about money, he wouldn't charge anything, but then, everything is about money). who won't put it on their saws because it cuts into their profits(and won't line his pockets). Frankly, I think the CPSC recall was the plan from the get go - Gass is a lawyer by profession.
And oh, it gets better - Gass has taken to testifying on behalf of plaintiffs in lawsuits against the manufacturers. I know he was involved in the Osario V. Ryobi case(it gets even better, Osarios law firm has some connection to Gass), where Ryobi was sued for producing "a defective product" because it lacked flesh sensing technology, an Osario was supposedly maimed because of it.
