A tank in decent condition can store CO2 indefinitely- as in decades. I recently used a 16-oz tank just to test a gun, and I'm pretty sure I hadn't filled that tank since about 1999 or 2000.
The only reason a tank might fail is either a leaky valve (easy to test with a squirt or two of Windex) or if it gets too hot and blows the burst disc.
The latter isn't a big issue for me (70F is a
day) but for people in the sun belt, keep it indoors and out of the hot garage, and you'll be fine.
