If the drive has a wide, flat, usually gray, "ribbon" cable from the motherboard, it's an EIDE/ATA (sometimes just called IDE) drive. If the cable is only about a half-inch wide and maybe red, it's a SATA drive. To make a positive check of an EIDE/ATA CD drive, the best way is to buy or borrow a cheap old play-only CD drive and swap it for the suspect drive. Most used-computer repair shops will have a junk-box full of those because nobody wants 'em any more.
That'll help tell you if the CD drive is bad anyway.
