Remember talking about kiting with you over on the other forum. Gusty wind is worth the travel time to find a good place to practice. Unpredicable conditions only make it harder if not a little unsafe. Highly recommend a depowerable kite if you can afford it. I've since acquired a full set of depowerable snow/land kites and about to replace my everyday/midrange water kite. The range on the new kites is amazing.
If it makes you feel any better I probably didn't get to half my projects I had intended to do either. I can't complain as getting sidetracked with a new lathe and other machinery and tooling is just as rewarding.
I have a retail board that convinced me to invest in making my own. It's so dissapointing when you have to buy something you can make due to limitations in time just to realise it wasn't really worth the money! :O)
