Computer help!!! CPU pegs at 100%...

by Thru-Hiker

I have a netbook with an Atom processor. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB. It worked wonderfully for a long time, it was perfect for school. Now it suddenly likes to peg itself at 100% CPU usage. I watch the cpu/ram dial gadget and the CPU stays at about 40% when I'm not running any app. But if I open word or VLC, it pegs right to 100%, and everything gets choppy. It hasn't always been like this.

I did the obvious things. Opened task manager and looked at the processes, but nothing shows a bunch of CPU usage. Updated my virus dats and did a full scan, nothing came up. Monitored CPU usage in task manager and never saw anything suddenly take a bunch of resources. Searched each process that was running (looked up on the web) to make sure they were legit. Just have no idea why its suddenly doing this. And even when the cpu pegs at 100%, my ram always remains in the 50% range.
Any other places I should be looking?
