AAC is also a pretty common audio codec to find in .mp4 files. Could be a number of non-MP3 codecs in there, but I agree that you should transcode it once (if necessary) and be done with it. The more times you do it, the more information you're going to lose.
Also, don't those online "youtube converter" type sites typically give you pretty crap bitrates?
