You're missing something here. When you write a website with PHP, what you're actually writing is an application that spits out HTML (and often Javascript).

You cite Pandora as an example. Unfortunately that's not correct. Pandora is very much written in something like PHP or Ruby. When you "view source" on a website, what you're seeing is the output, not the code actually being used to run the website.
