'Because we could'...
It's a showpiece, something he takes out on the rare occasion only.
A Hummer, on the other hand is sold as a 'daily driver' for people with too much money and not enough common sense. It's too big to fit in any parking space, it's so big that it gets difficult to handle in towns(where I understand most of them are), they lack the ruggedness of the military counterpart.
Comfort is probably the same, though...
There's actually one of these monstrosities in my town, and I overheard the owner complaining about the fuel-cost. (We both have to fuel up quite often. Him because it uses it like it was going out of fashion, me because my scooter only takes 5.5L max... )
The Ford F-series I understand is a wonderfully rugged pickup truck?
Not certain about it's 'off-road' or 'bad road' capablilities as the only one I ever saw was 'city-driven' and didn't look as it had ever been closer to dirt than half a mile.
Not that driving 'off road' would be legal here.
(Those who has a real need - and can drive off road legally - are usually farmers, and they have tractors)
In fact, I live in a area with many farms, and very few of those drive pickups at all. Most drive different types of Vans, MPVs or even a robust 4WD.
They go by the 'if it doesn't fit in the trunk, it'll fit on the trailer' rule.
My father drove a big hydraulic digger for many years(Not a JCB, but several other brands), and made 'tractor roads' dug irrigation ditches for fields and the occasional hole for the basement of a new building, and in the winter cut firewood. He managed to bring with him all his tools(for daily maintenance, chainsaw, fuel for chainsaw) and drive those roads with his Lancia A112.
(The A112 had barely larger wheels than my scooter has... )
As for the 'plentiful oil reserves'?
I mentioned Tarsand, where they get about 5:1 fuel out, mostly using 'Fracking'.
Now, traditional pumping is closer to 15:1, or 3 times as cost effective, so why is 'Fracking' suddenly considered 'economically viable'?
While it will take a while to use all the 'easily available' oil, why reach that point sooner than necessary?
and yeah, I'm a Troll, I'm supposed to write this stuff...
