Mars is also prone to major electromagnetic disruptions, fully capable of knocking out anything electronic. Humans have yet to devise any means of keeping sensitive equipment from getting fried by random EMPs from the planet you're working on.
Virtually everything you send to a Mars colony will depend on electronics in some way to function. Until someone comes up with a microchip that can withstand a lightning bolt, manned missions beyond lunar territory are science fiction.
