The ordinary fans didn't drive the Superhero Movie Boom, it was having Hollywood insiders who happened to be comic book fans that drove the boom. For example, Producer Jon Favreau insisted on having Robert Downey, Jr. play Tony Stark/ Iron Man. I think a big part of the success of Iron Man was because RDJ was the right age. (As opposed to all the Fantastic Four movies, which made Reed Richards way too young.) The success of Iron Man made the other movies possible.
