Agreed, that a comic with an interesting cast and exciting plot line could make for a good movie. Which is why I think that Freefall could become a great movie. The whole reverse-robot-apocalypse is a great plot.
Your examples don't work for me because The Titantic was never obscure, even if there hadn't been a recent movie about it. While the details of Robo Cop and Terminator weren't common, dystopian futuristic settings are.
The flip side, which I think I already mentioned, is that Hollywood is capable of taking great stories and ruining them (The Dark is Rising, Damnation Alley and John Carter leap to mind.)
