Like Doc said, Patreon is geared more toward providing a (more or less) steady funding stream for people who are creating regularly - usually monthly or more frequently.
If you're looking for a one-time infusion of funds to upgrade tools and materials, something like GoFundMe might be more in order. It's often used to raise money for a single project or expense (i.e. building upgrades, funeral expenses for a family who've lost someone, etc.) where contributors don't receive some product or consideration like they would in a Kickstarter.
