There's a reason Winchester discarded that method

As it turns out, the slot in the magazine tube is a great place for dirt and grit to get in and gum up the action. Plus, the follower has a tab that protrudes from the slot and makes it difficult to get a good grip with your off hand without interfering with feeding. So sometimes you can't really brace it properly to get a steady sight picture and thus a good shot. Granted, accuracy with a smoothbore paintball gun isn't going to be that great in the first place, but you'd still have to worry about having misfeeds due to the magazine follower smacking in to your hand.
