I was surprised to find a local (well, that is, in-state) Maker Space nup here, a short while back thanks to a quick article in the paper.
And a couple of weeks back, I made a trip up there to both donate a small truckload of parts and goodies (old stepper motors, some DC motors, gears and whatnot out of copiers, hardware, etc.) and to check the place out.
It's a pity it's a three-plus hour drive away, I'd spend a lot of time there if it was anything less than an hour away. They've got a couple pretty decent 3D printers, a 100-watt laser cutter, a decent selection of woodworking tools, and so on.
Their only metalworking tool- besides a gas torch and a small MIG- was a tiny, mostly-dismantled Atlas lathe from the 50s. The guy I spoke to said they'd love to have it up and running, but really, they'd be better served by blowing a grand on a Grizzly 9x20.
