A moment of silence in honor of a man who prevented nuclear war
I just read an article about the passing of Col. Stanislav Petrov. During the cold war, he was the Soviet Officer in the hot seat when the Soviet's early warning system told him that the US had launched a nuclear strike. He had do decide if he believed the computers or his gut instinct in the short amount of time he had to decide.
He relied on years of training and his gut instinct to make his decision to NOT start nuclear retaliation; and he stopped the nuclear holocaust in its tracks.
