Skills accumulate from work. I think it's similar to the old saying that "good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement". Skills come from making shit wrong - you don't like it so you make it again. Eventually it comes out right, but to get there you can run across a lot of wrong.
Trust me when I say that there's an awful lot of ugly in the trash behind me.
