I count myself extremely lucky that my exposure to the telecomm industry was the post-wirewrap era, and on the data side only. That stuff is almost as bad as what you described, with the only relief being that the wires did follow a color code and standard. (mostly)
My boss did, however, instruct me on the basics of wire-wrapping, although I've forgotten most of it.
