Just thought I'd get in ahead of the crowd.
A novel I read once, a long time ago, about a planet whose primary export was mercenaries. They had a custom- Before a mission, everyone involved would gather and drink a toast.
"Everyone comes back!"
It was quite prominently noted that this toast was a wish that would never come true. Unfortunately, it never comes true in reality either. So, as someone who was deemed unfit to go himself, I offer this toast-
"To absent friends, in hopes of a safe return!"
