I was in college from 1992-1996; that 386 was second hand, don't recall the price tag beyond "cheap."
Prior to that, I'd been using a Tandy 1800HD laptop - 286 w/640k + 384k RAM, 20Mb HDD, MS-DOS 5.0, and the battery was already way past its usable lifetime; still worked for writing term papers.
I hung on to the Tandy until sometime around 2003, until the BIOS batteries died again and the display quit working.
Told you, I hang on to things! There's a name for that syndrome...
