      The workpiece itself supplies all the braking.

      After all, it's welding them together by rubbing a moving part against a fixed part- not much different than rubbing a fixed brake pad against a moving brake rotor. Take the driving power off the moving part, and friction to the fixed part stops it almost instantly.
