Antidepressants

by

Dee I have done nothing but research because I have felt so bad and depressed and irritable for the past 7 months so here is what I have found out about antidepressants. There are four classes of them, and there are numerous kinds in each class. Each class effects the brain in different ways as well as each kind in each class. I have tried Serazone, but had to go off because of law suits that it causes liver damage. I tried Prozac and hated it. I tried Effexor for months and as long as I took high doses of it I felt slightly better but at high doses it killed my sex life and ability to climax. I am now trying Zoloft which my new Dr. says she prefers over Effexor anyway.I also read on the web site for a Canadian newspaper that Zoloft has been approved by the FDA as one of the more highly effective drugs for treating PMS and PMDD. But everyone is effected differently by different drugs. Also Zoloft and one called Celexa is supposed to work within 2 weeks unlike Prozac and I think Sarafem which can take 4 to 6 weeks. You just need to find a Dr. who is willing to stick with you while you figure out what will give you some relief. Wouldn't it be great if you could find that one Dr. who would believe you about PTS and work with you that way along with working with the brain part of it?
So point being do not give up. I do not feel that an antidepressant will correct the imbalance of hormones completely, but they are just starting to research the hormonal, especially estrogen, role in the depletion of seretonin and depression. Also if taking pills makes you tired you can adjust the time of day that you take them. I've learned alot about this topic just from e-mailing Walgreens Pharmacy and asking specific questions about how drugs work and the specific side effects. They are really great about getting back to you quickly. I find it helps to have that kind of research on your side when you go to your Dr. I found that I knew more about antidepressants and what they do than the last Dr. (who was a female by the way and said tubals do nothing to your hormones) and told me she could no longer see me because I needed a shrink. I am having a slightly better day today because that almost makes me laugh.
Hope some of this helps you. Let me know. Denise
