National CEDAW Ratification Call-in Day
October 8, 2002
Urgent calls are needed to U.S. Senate offices in support of the Treaty for the Rights of Women before the upcoming vote on the Senate floor. Also known as CEDAW (UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women), the treaty is a powerful tool to promote the human rights of women and girls.
The United States has long been a world leader on human rights. But U.S. failure to ratify the treaty allows other countries to distract attention from their neglect of women. Ratification does not require any change in U.S. law and would be a powerful statement of our continuing commitment to ending discrimination against women worldwide. The treaty's provisions are similar to existing treaties on genocide, torture, race, and civil and political rights.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Join advocates from around the country in a National CEDAW Ratification Call-in Day. The following Senators are either leaning towards voting for ratification or undecided about their vote on CEDAW. On October 8, 2002 Senators from around the nation need to hear from you.
Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202/224-3121 and urge these Senators to vote in favor of CEDAW ratification.
