PTLS risk with Essure?
by
After finding this site and learning about Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome a few years ago, I decided that tubal ligation was not a birth control option for me. Today, I learned of Essure, a non-surgical insert. Rather than making an abdominal incision then cutting, cauterizing or clipping the tube, this procedure involves placing an insert into the fallopean tubes via the vagina and uterus. Essure.com describes the insert's action:
"During the first 3 months following the procedure, your body and the micro-inserts work together to form a tissue barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. During this period, you will need to use another form of birth control."
Also according to the Essure website:
"The micro-inserts are made from polyester fibers and metals (nickel-titanium and stainless steel). These materials have been studied and used in the heart and other areas of the human body (e.g., heart valve replacements, blood vessel grafts, and abdominal repair) for many years."
I searched tubal.org and drhufnagel.com for information about Essure, but came up with nothing. I hope Dr. Hufnagel has done some research on Essure and can offer an expert opinion? Common sense would suggest that this procedure is far less risky and traumatizing to the body than tubal ligation. Could the action of this microinsert or its insertion lead to PTLS?
If this has been discussed in the public or member's forum, I hope somebody will point me to the thread, as there is no search function on this board that I can see.
The manufacturer's website is http://www.essure.com.
